weird engine noise

so i was riding home today from a friends place, about 120 miles away.

when ever i was in a town, in the first few thousand RPM there was this really weird clacking sound, kinda like a knock but more metalic. it was very sporadic and not contiguous with engine speed. at higher speeds the bike ran great i think, hard to hear with exhasut. there has been no decrease in pwoer or performance. motor is stock except for cans has about 10,000 miles.

any suggestion?

kinda sounds like the cct's are going, and what you hear is the chain slapin around. but with out me being able to hear it, it could be something else.

sounds similar to noises mine makes. sound is quite distinctive and seems to go away as rpms increase. 2002 with about 12,000 or so miles unverified (wrecked, original gauges gone). I've got apes and a few other mods ready to go and next time the plastic and tank are off it's show time.

on a positive note a new fuel sending unit makes my gauge work!!!

APE's are easy compared to replacing the entire engine when the stock CCT's go bad. There are lots of good threads on here telling you how to install them. If you have even a little mechanical ability you can do it.

On a different note, I'm riding to Boone today because I'm bored. About 190 miles from my house, just going to do do a there and back and check things out. My son and I are going to Tweetsie Railroad on the 4th.

My bike clacks... these bikes just clacks... the clutches are loud, the carbs are loud, cam chains are loud even with ccts. dont freak out. your talkin about the biggest carborated vtwin honda put in a rocket. the are loud. no matter what people say, apes are way over used. i just replaced my cct's and didnt hear a damn thing change in my bike. cct's can be faulty, but its rare.
