Water Temp Sensor cause of high rpm power loss?

The bike runs great from idle to around 6000 rpm where it starts to lose power rapidly. I wouldn't call it a miss. Spark plugs look good and new air filter. My Honda manual states that the water temp sensor has some bearing on the ignition timing. Tested the sensor and it has open continuity. Gonna throw a new one in and hope for the best, keeping my fingers crossed that I can avoid tracking down an ignition or carburetor problem! Any thoughts?

Why hello there!

Highly doubt that's the problem... more likely it's fuel/carb related or possibly electrical/ignition. What other info you have? Do you know what kind of air filter or jetting you have. How old is the bike?

Just a guess but I was taking care of removing my PAIR and EVAP systems, I pluged the hoses near the top of the carbs. I had good power to 6500 RPM and then it just fell on its face. Not sure if you have any of the mods done but could be worth a look? Maybe check the airbox for obstructions where the hoses feed in.

Usually that is an ignition issue since more sparks need more juice. But does it rev strong in neutral? The fuel side of it would be feul starvation. For that it could be a petcock issue.

Obviously over 6k you need more fuel delivered. Check battery voltage and then start bike & check again. You should see a voltage rise. A weak battery or charging system could starve it of juice for the coils.

sorry, I beg to differ. You have an airbox leak. Make sure everything is nestled right back to where it was. Even if you have a cocked breather tube - when you got more air than the Superhawk wants - she crashes.

thanks for some direction! I'm gonna investigate, hopefully I can figure it out. The bike is bone stock, just put a new air filter in it. It will rev all the way to redline in neutral (yeah I know, good way to trash an engine, but had to test it!) I have a factory honda manual for it that describes testing the ignition; I'm fixin' to try that. Also I have the airbox all apart so I will check that out too. If all else fails the carbs are comin' apart! Good forum, thanks for the info!
