Stuttering & Sputtering

I have an 03 Superhawk with 22k on it. I recently had the oil changed along with replacing the spark plugs, air filter and having all the fluids checked (brake and clutch fluid looking pretty murky). When I got my bike back I was told that the fluids were fine and didn’t need to be changed. When I ride it now it tends to buck when trying to maintain a constant speed, and when I give it some throttle it bogs down before giving any acceleration. Once acceleration begins it bucks again. This was never a problem prior to taking it in this last time. What can be done to fix this problem?

When they changed the air filter did you go from stock to aftermarket or the other way around?

I have also heard that using "Seafoam" might fix some of this problem?

Seafoam used correctly can't hurt anything.

Try riding with the choke out a little bit, I suspect your problem will get a little better. If it does you know you're way lean and need to re jet. Or if that's something you're not interested in just go back to stock air filter.

Can switching to an aftermarket air filter amke your bike run worse? I thought the whole point of that was so that it would perform better?

It will make it run better, if you tune the carbs to match. You have thrown off the air/fuel ratio. You now have more air than is right for the amount of fuel.

What is the average cost or time for labor to have the carb tuned to match?

That's a tricky question. The jet kit itself is around $90. The labor can get pretty steep if done right though, sometimes the carbs have to come off 3 or 4 times. Some people will probably just go with recommended settings and call it good after one try.

Do I just need to buy the jet kit and take it into the mechanic? Anything else needed?
