I had that noise after having apes installed. Never got it to go away, went back to stock cct's, way WAY quieter.

Since I'm new, I get to bring old threads back from the dead and ask a couple stupid questions, right?

I rode my new to me '00 home 160 miles and it sounded mechanically perfect.

Started it up today and it sounds great at all rpms, until I drop it into gear and pull away. Sounds like a box of hammers being rolled down a flight of stairs.

Transmission? I've never heard of a bike going bad at 14k miles, but...

I wasn't thinking cam chain cause it doesn't make noise at a standstill.

You can kinda feel clunking too.... Weird.

Well two quick questions....

1) When was the last time the oil was changed?

2) Does it make the noise in all the gears or just in some of them?

It's getting changed in a hour. IDK last time. Just got it Sunday and couldn't resist the sunny day commute this morning.

I don't really notice it above 2nd gear, or 4k rpm.

Well SH's really don't like dirty oil and the hard shifting might be due to it. Also it might have bad dogs on either first or second as most hamfisted riders don't hammer on them past the hard shift from first to second as it gets to scary for them.....

Just took it back out for a little jaunt to try and isolate it. What does the carb slide sound like? It's kind of a clunk-clunk when I left out the clutch and give it a little gas. Also, clunk clunk when I roll off the gas. I'm gonna need new plates, huh?

Well it could well be the carb slides. The hollow clunk sound is them opening and closing at low rpm.

I read somewhere that a leaking exhaust gasket could cause that sound - anyone?

Well an exhaust leak is more of a ticking sound that follows the engine rpm where as the carb slides have move of a hollow clunk that can only be heard at idle and low rpm.

How would one adjust the carb slides? I'm going to put a hundred on her tomorrow, and try to do some wrenching Sun. All I've ever done to a carb is jet.

earplugs..... but really there is nothing you can do but live with it, it's just a noise that a SH makes

Oil was flat nasty. Dark black. I filled her up with some fresh Amsoil Syn. and did 145 miles yesterday. No noise, of course, the Ipod helped with that.

Really though, clunk either went away or became significantly less harsh. Thanks for the responses.

Got the valves checked and one was a hair loose but still in spec. Could be the source of my tick id say. My friend says if we shim the valve it would border the tight side so i left it for now. Guess i just deal with the noise and move on to the next wrench job! I really like working on these things Starting to get the hang of it

I believe I read you removed the PAIR while you were in there. Did you reverse those little dohickies on the valve covers where the hoses connected?

when I first removed my PAIR valves, I had a noise because I just removed the valves and put on the block off plates. They (the ebay plates) were not strong enough to hold off the gasses. I then installed the valves with the stoppers reversed under the plates which worked fine.

I hope that this makes sense to you - I am a bit off this morning.

On my other SH I ordered plates from a member who sells them in the classifieds - much thicker.

Yeah i just flipped them per everyones recommendation and put on the block off plates that were being sold on here for a while. I had the tick before that though. I removed all of that when i swapped the ccts.

mine started doing some clunking, knocking, and other weird noises. I did the TPS along with the other mods listed below(air mix, shim needles, sync carbs, etc.), and it doesn't do it anymore. that clunking/knocking sound is definitely scary sounding ****, but these engines do some weird things if everything's not right. It's kinda like a protest song. hahaha. i really don't know what the sound is caused by specifically, but I know that some part of what i did took care of it.
