running rich

i got the hawk up and running but according to the fellow riding behind me this weekend he could smell gas ... apparently i am running a bit rich ....

is there an easy way to fix this ... i am sure the bike has stock pipes and i am pretty sure they were the stock jets when i pulled the carbs

It'd be easier to do a bafflectomy to lean it out than to rejet. It'll sound real nice too!

If you've got stock exhaust and jetting, can't think how you'd be running rich unless the air filter is dirty and clogged up. I'd check that first. Next I'd check to see if i really had stock jetting.

i was considering the bafflectomy but i am scared i will eff it up ... need someone local to help me out :-)

rk: i would have to pull the carbs again to make sure but CNI Dawg from this forum is on my other forum and gave me a bunch of tips when i was pulling my carbs which made it easier ... from his description they are the stock jets

Get a set of cheap slip-ons or buy a set of stocks with the ectomy already done. I see them on ebay alot. Oh yah, better rich than lean!

we discussed it on the phone while i was taking it apart

i cant remember what the numbers were now but he said that was stock .... which made me wonder cause the bike had D&D on it before i bought it and the PO put stock cans back on it cause he said it was too loud ... thought you had to rejet for cans but i guess that is just full systems not slip ons

I have jardine slip-ons and a stock filter. Definetly doesnt need to be rejeted. I did just replace my KN filter with stock... I do believe that running both the KN and slipons calls for a rejet.

Side note- especially the california bikes. I have a CA bike and it runs lean enough without the KN. If its running rich, check your filter, make sure its clean.

I just found out my front slide has not opening when when I gave it gas. Took the front vacuum chamber cover off and found a hole in the diaphragm.

Personally, I wouldn't judge the mix by the smell. If it runs right and doesn't smoke, Il'd leave it alone and ride it.
For some reason most of these Hawksters just won't leave them alone tho'
Has something to do with ethnicity perhaps. Whatever that means.

Im not gonna pull my carbs, but i wanna take a listen and make sure i can see everything moving right. Im also gonna go back to my K&N and clean it.

Im thinkin that will help. Funnything tho. Starving it of air with the stock filter (i think mine is jetted, might wanna make sure yours isnt) made it have alot better low end. almost through it over backwards after i changed them out.
