replacement tachometer

After a lot of post-R/R failure (overcharged) electrical testing and part replacing my only remaining problem is a non-functioning tach. Following electrical tests in the manual I traced the problem to the CDI or tach itself. The bike starts and runs great which leads me to believe the tach is the problem. It has power going to it and before the bike died from the R/R the tach went crazy.

Bike is a 1998 with all analog gauges. Dealer says $215 for a new one but I'll try to find something used.

Anyone else have the tach killed by the R/R? Ever replaced one? How difficult is splitting the gauge cluster?

Finally, any other tests I can do to make sure the tach is in fact the problem?

Thanks for the help.

Nevin

No but mine took out a brand new $20 silverstar headlight which is in the general vicinity and the battery; 18+ volts at idle. Sounds like the tach ate it.

$215 is retail. Servicehonda.com has it for $157. Haven't watched ebay in a while but I doubt you can find a used set of gauges for less than that amount.

Replacing components in the cluster assembly is extremely easy to do... the backside of the unit is completely open.

Thanks. Unfortunately missed bidding and the only other gauge cluster is $200 BIN.

Regarding disassembly, I've had the cluster off but didn't know if it was glued/sealed in addition to the hex screws.
