Well backfires mean misfire, you have oxygen and fuel mixed and an exhaust valve shoot flames from a normal combustion, then ignite the mixture in the pipe and pops. So misfires can be from lean, rich, bad spark and even a few other funny but rare events.

Do you have anything hooked up to the bottom nipple on the petcock? Is the petcock on?

As of when i put it back together, all 5 fuel connections were connected. I guess there is always a chance that one blew off,b ut i dont know why. But yeah, it is acting very strange. I am going to go start working on her again in a few minutes.

No, that's not what I'm asking. Repeat: Is anything hooked up to the bottom nipple????

Well open the fuel bowls to see if it's full of gas, if gas is pouring out, gas comes down from the tank. Got to love those carbs lol

I just spent about an hour on the phone with Josh. Hopefully we'll get it figured out. He's going to check the TPS and the mixture screws. I'm thinking TPS is the culprit for the bike stalling while idling, and the mixture screws are the culprit for not starting easily. The bike still will not start and the plugs, though not fouled, were wet with fuel. All his lines are hooked up correctly too.

Thanks Greg, i am going to head off to work and i will continue to work on her tonight after work and then after classes tomorrow. Thanks again. The front plug was sparking perfectly without any cleaning, so i am pretty confused, but it didnt look like it had much fuel on it. So I guess they really arent getting much fuel. I will keep updated.

Too much advance ? Possible if the fuel is ok. I tought of welding the DJ tool to a small cheap clicker wrench to get there without removing everything everytime I need to readjust. The harley guys have a idle screw with a **** that seem very convenient to me.

OK, big update:

I spent the whole afternoon working on Samantha and i will debrief you on what occurred

First, i think i found out what was wrong the other day. I was chatting with bill today and he told me to double check the pilot jets to make sure they were getting fuel. Well, i always looked at the holes on the sides, but not in the middle, which was what actually mattered Both had the very tiniest hole i had ever seen. Just barely there. Well, i looked for a staple as he directed, but the staple didn't work, i was able to locate a very tiny needle. Well wow!!! After a few minutes all the sudden a real hole appeared that was similar to the hole on my 50k, not quite as big, but i am not sure if i really can tell the difference. So yeah, one problem fixed. I believe that was the main one, i am still not sure what is causing them to become clogged.

Next, i think i figured out why she was backfiring, i was actually on the telephone with a girl while i was putting the bike back together and i only set one of the 2 needles to the middle position, the other was on the second position, so that would cause each cylinder to get different amounts of fuel. Which i think would cause a backfire. I am not certain, but that is what i have come up with.

So another exciting part today was when i was on the phone with bill and i was going to try to blow the gunk out of the pilot jet with carb cleaner, well about 5 seconds after bill told me to be careful of my eyes, i sprayed the bottle and, guess what happened. A jet went directly into my eyes. OH MAN, that burns!!!
So i spent the next 15 minutes with my eyes under my faucet in the kitchen. Wow, there is a reason they suggest eye protection when working with that stuff and just working in a garage. I wore eye protection for the rest of the day and actually got another jet into the eye area, i was happy that i was wearing the glasses the second time around.

So yeah, it was a very exciting day, i have removed the fuel mixture screws and i am going to use the tools at the machine shop at my school tomorrow to score them. I believe i will be able to get her back on the road tomorrow afternoon after my lab class.

here are some pix.

This is what happened to the area around my mixture screws. They got pretty much destroyed by the time i was done. I didn't actually mean to break them, but after it happened once, i thought i might as well finish the job

This is a picture of what happened to my throttle cable piece. I still have no idea what actually happened. It still works, it is just very messy now.

Another Angle

My other carbs that i have cannibalized.

So i have really learned a ton! I am really feeling comfortable with these carbs now Oh, i also went to the honda shop today to get a new 182 main jet, but they didn't have it and they would have to order it, so i am going to just order one online or call them later. It was going to be a minimum of a week. I was wondering if anyone knew where a good place is to get parts like that, also a new set of mixture screws might be good being that i have kinda butchered them, does anyone know of a place that sells them with phillips heads? I see philips head in my Honda manual. I would love to get a set of those.

Josh, the suspense is killing me. Is it working now?? Honda shops are a good place to order those parts. They can get things in within a day or two usually and no shipping. My local shop is never more (and usually less) on stock parts than ronayers.com (another good source, also online microfiche for parts by model and year)

I bought a 1jz engine, well whole car for my new supra body i acquired a few months ago. I have dreamt about doing a 1jz swap into a supra for like 5 years now, i finally found the right engine !!! SO that was really exciting. Here is the link if anyone is interested

here is the body

Oh, bike related now, i went to my univeristy shop and got the mixture screws fixed. So here is a pic of what they looked like after doing them. I am super excited to try her out tomorrow I dont have any plans as of now for tomorrow, so i think i will have the afternoon free to finnish I am crossing my fingers

Tuning Problems

So I got the hawk running today. SHe is idling perfectly!!! which is great, but now she doesnt run smooth. I took 3 videos.
It seems that she slightly backfires and also wont hold a speed/rpm.
Let me know what you think.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_8ScQcXIR0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imDcSwRUAd0

this video gives you a good idea on what is wrong. I try to hold her at 3k and she keeps dropping. I have a feeling she is running lean, really lean. I am not sure.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOE9Wzug-_w

OK, current setting are: 178/180, middle on the needle and 2.25 turns on the mixture screws.

I need to add how awesome the mixture screws worked. I slotted them yesterday and it is the best way to do it. I was amazed how smooth they turned. I was worried there would be a lot of friction, but there wasnt. All the way in and then slowly turn out. It was super easy. So Please send me any advice you have. Thanks!

I think the key here is to get your main jets sized correctly. Until then you should raise the needles at least one notch.

I bet if you have the choke pulled out a little bit it runs better, right?

glad its almost there josh. do you still have a stock filter laying around? if like greg says the choke helps you could also drop the stock filter in and that might get you closer as you are pretty near stock jetting now.

I dont know, i will try it, umm so you are saying just pull the choke and see if it smoothes out the 3k range? I will go try that.

move the clip down one notch, which will raise the sitting needle up higher and thus suck up more fuel when the slides are low

YAYAYAYAAYAYAy!!! I just jumpped up and down for 5 minutes!!! You were right greg!!! It runs great on choke. I took videos. It is like it hickups when it doesnt have choke, but on choke, extra fuel, it runs perfectly!
here are the vids! They will probably take a few minutes to upload, youtube is really slow. Today totally rocks!!!

I dont think my bike has ever ran that good! I cant wait until i get to go test her, i think i might run her with choke for a bit. It has been a week since i rode her last

Video shows running no choke at first, then i turn the choke on and she runs perfectly upto even about 7 grand Totally smooth I did a visual carb sync before i put them back on, i dont know how close they are though Idling with choke is great, also remember that the bike was totally cold, it hadnt been run for more then about a minute when the video was taken.

is it also possible that i am just dealing with a cold engine and that there isnt anything wrong. I have never had a carbed engine before this, and up until now, i have always run so rich that it didnt ever need choke, maybe if i ride her for 5 min, she might be just perfect? I will try it out. I am going for a ride now!!! See you guys lata!

Big update!! She runs and runs well, so, i ran her for about 20 minutes, we went downtown and filled up. So what i noticed:

She definitely doesn't have as much power! I am pretty sure she is just running too lean

She actually warmed up. To date she has like never got past barely the far left on the temp gauge. Tonight she was actually near the middle. It was awesome, so that is a good thing.

She really sounded differently. I was running her with just a tiny bit of choke, i saw about 2mm of metal on the choke stick. Maybe just 1mm. About 1/4th of full out. She ran perfectly! No backfiring or sputtering or anything.

So that is what is going on. She starts right up, warms up and runs well, just not as well. I kinda had to giver her much more throttle then i am used to. So i defiantly need to move the needle one up. That i think will fix it. I am going to move it to the 4th position. Wow, it is seriously warm out right now, 56! It has been in the 30's for the last week I might actually go back out and tear back into her and fix her tonight Well thank you everyone who helped. I am so grateful!

Do any of you might know why she didn't sound like herself. The engine was definitely making different tones then i am used to. It was kinda worrying me. Any ideas? I don't think you could clearly hear the sounds in my movies. Let me know. Thanks!

Maybe the carbs are out of synch, did you readjust the TPS ?? The different timing could change the tone. Glad to see it running again, if it ran better with the choke on, you may want to back up the needles for more fuel. Take a plug out to see how it burns, a close pic would be nice. Keep it up

yes, i did mess with the carbs a bit, i just hate having them sound differently. It sounds like one of the cylinders is hitting a bit harder. just scares me, but no backfiring is very nice Greg and Bill, can you tell me your thoughts. Thanks!

OH yeah, i noticed another big thing yesterday, the fumes were not killing me, usually the fumes were really thick and they would make me sick. I didnt know why, i thought it was just because no cat and bad exhaust, but now it is barely noticable and way leaner I am super happy.

Josh,

I think you need to spring for a set of mercury sticks or a Twinmax or something and get those carbs sync'ed correctly. Every time you take the carbs off you risk changing the sync. BTW, if you call Sudco they have all Keihin jets in stock. I think you should purchase a 182(f) and a 185(r). Try those and if it's running rich then go down one step to 182r/180f. Don't forget you will need to change needle heights again after going to bigger mains. You didn't realize you'd become a pro at carb work, did you?

Update: I just got done changing the needles. I think they are pretty close. She actually warmed up and was able to be taken off of choke after about 2 minutes. That is very quick, i mean in the video you can actually see the temp gauge on, which really used to never happen. Also i am not dealing with the horrid fumes anymore. That is so nice, also no or very little smoke. So here are 2 videos. I am getting a bad noise on the side, i am not sure what it is. It sounds like something is vibrating, but i cant figure out what. She definitely sounds different then she used to. The noise didn't pick up when i took the videos, i was hoping it would.

she was spewing something for a second when i started her, but it stopped and evaporated, so i am guessing it was just some extra fuel.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EASOvYVVynw

Second video is running on no choke.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwaRjDJepec

I am going to go for a ride and see how things go. Not perfect, but close, the carbs definitely need syncing after i kinda messed them up trying to do it visually

sounds great josh. That is a lot of progress in a week or so - and like greg says, think of all you've learned! We should have superhawk olympics: one of the events can be carb pull, needle shim and restart!

The noise isn't obvious on the video - be sure its not an air leak from an exhaust header mount or the cannister mount vs. something from the engine.
The synchronization can really smooth out the idle (both feel and sound-wise) also.

nice job

bill
