Q for Hawkrider and others with 1000RR experience

It seems I'm having a hard time finding a complete triple tree for a 929/954RR, I have a top triple, but no lower...

So, since I got a full triple tree with my forks I might just use that instead... It's in transit right now so I can't really measure it...

Would anyone know if the dimension of the steering stem from the 1000RR matches that of the VTR and 929/954RR? Will it be possible to use the same bearings? (i'm most likely ordering tapered one's...)

And It also seems I have the same problem as GregW... I have a 04-05 fork and 06-07 rotors... As far as I can tell, the only difference is that the newer fork uses spacers on the caliper bolts...

Is this correct, and if so where can I get them? I can see them in the Ron Ayers microfiches I think, but no Part# for them... I really don't want to go down to the Honda center around here... They charge ridiculous amounts for just about everything...

Well... yeah... but I already got the 1000RR forks...

And in all honesty I like them better... Radial calipers...

Go to allballsracing.com and see if they take the same bearing part number. That should answer your diameter question but not the stem length measurement.

Hi Tweety,
I’m learning as I go, so I’m no expert. Greg (HawkRider) clued me in on the ’06 caliper spacers and using the ’06 flange bolts (caliper to fork), which are longer than the ’04 flange bolts. I bought my stuff from http://www.partspitstop.com

Part #’s
Flange bolt (10x62): 90131-MEL-D20
Spacer, Front Fork: 51497-MEL-D20

You’d think at $7.77 you’d get more than one bolt, but no. You need to enter 4 in the quantity box for both parts, at least for this parts supplier.

The 1000RR fork spacing is 2mm wider than the 929/954. Mix and match of upper and lower triples will not work. It takes a while - took me 5 months of collecting parts. I was being picky. I found the upper triple was more difficult to find than the lower triple.

This may be a little out of my league...

How much is involved in doing a swap to a 954 front end? Obviously need the forks, trees, stem, axle, rim, etc.

Is it something where I could just buy the parts and slap it on in a weekend?

Well, I wasn't thinking of mixing them... I have a upper 929/954, but no lower... I found the upper ridiculously easy & cheap, and it was in mint condition when it arrived too... A lower however seems worth it's weight in gold?

I also got a FULL 1000RR triple tree with new unmounted bearing with the forks... unfortunately since Swedish customs are slower than drying paint it's still not arrived... (I think they like large boxes... Last time I had a full set of fairings shipped it arrived with the inspection stickers of three (3!) swedish customs officials... As far as I know Sweden only has one border? )

So the question was if that steering stem would match the frame?

Oh and yeah... I still haven't bought a lot of other parts yet... I'm also being picky...

But as I can swap the steering stem and then put her down on the front stand which lifts in the stem and keep working on her during the winter that isn't a problem, IF I can get the parts needed for that...

I have to be picky, even if I find mint stuff att ridiculous low prices the shipping across the pond will account for half my tab... (And it will still be lower than getting this stuff localy, new OR used...)

I have seem complete 954 front ends on ebay... including allmost all you need (brakes etc)... Ususally you just need to add the rim/wheel... Getting a complete set like that would have killed my budget combined with shipping, but for you being in the US, that would probably be easy...

Oh... There really shouldn't be to much modification work... And the parts there is seems to have been covered rather well by others including Greg...

Main parts would be moving the radiators and getting the steering stops working... plus the fun task of removing/re-installing bearings...

Oh... and the really fun part comes when you fork out for the Helibars...

I think people quoted 3/4" ?

See here for a rather detailed description of how to do it nicely...

Keep in mind I haven't done this yet... I'm still collecting parts and information myself...

But I'm rather confident that if I had all the needed parts before hand I would easliy do the bulk of the work over a weekend...

Now over here we had 8" of white stuff last night... So I'm glad to leave the bike in the warm and cosy workshop without getting impatient...
