Problem to start Firehawk after having reached worktemp
Hi everyone!
At occasions I have problems to start my Firestorm -99.
This occurs after the bike have reached worktemp and I have switched it off to then start it up again. The sound when I push the start button sounds just like when the battery level is low and the startmotor has problems turning the engine around. Anyone who had the same problem and managed to find the cause?
300km ago I changed the sparkplugs to NGK Iridium and the airfilter to a HIFLO
Regards,
David
edit: corrected some spelling

Three possible causes... Startermotor, or ignition coils/cables... Or general electric issues...
The most common is the third one... And while inexpensive to fix, it's usually a PITA, and could cost you plenty if it's left alone...
Check the R/R... is it still the OEM one from 99? Then it's the likely culprit...

Ok, thanks for the response.
I have read other forums, and have found that it could be the valves that needs to be adjusted? Do you think it is probable? (I don't know when they were adjusted, but that is something that I have planned to do in the nearest future)
I don't argue with you, but how does the the electrics play in when it doesn't start in warm state but in cold without any problems? This is just so I could learn and try to understand for myself.
By the way, I was out approximately 40min after it didn't start and it started without any problems..
Thank you for your help Tweety (Good that I always can count on you, even in the Swedish forum )

Well... a VTR is almost always a little harder to start when warm... Simple physics of metal expansion and such... So if the electronics are marginal, and you have depleted some from your battery at last start and haven't gained that back completely (takes a fairly long ride even with the battery and R/R at peak condition!) it's going to be a struggle... That's why...
And with a marginal R/R, you might not get it back at all... Or it might blow up... So I'd check that first, seeing as it's very easy... Then if that checks out, I'd go for the complicated stuff later...
Another reason i suspect the battery & R/R... You like me are from Sweden, so just coming out of hibernation... That's prime time for failures caused by ageing batteries and R/R's...
But yeah, could be in need of adjustments... But it's less likely to be the problem here...

Thank you Tweety.
I have found your guide about the MOSFET-R/Rs here at the forum and I have read it, good job!
I have found a R/R from a R1 99-01 for a good price (since I am still studying I don't want to spend that much on a MOSFET). Do you think this one will do the job?

Quite frankly I'm unable to follow your logic on this one... You are a student, so you want to keep cost down...
So you find a non-OEM one, that is non-MOSFET... At a price higher than I usually pay for OEM MOSFET R/R's... That's... Well... Odd?
That is going to cost you roughly 900:- once on the bike with taxes, duties and all that fun stuff... I just ordered a MOSFET one for one of the VTR riders on the forum, at roughly the same, and the last one before that ended up at ~700... Takes a little searching, but doable...

Kawasaki ZX10/ZX14 voltage regulator/rectifier 07-UP | eBay
This on the other hand, will cost you the $65 plus 179:- in shipping to Sweden plus tax and duties... Ie around 800:-... Then add $18 plus tax and duty for connectors, ~180... So around 980:-... For a OEM MOSFET... and that's a little more than usual...

Ok. Thanks for guiding me.
I don't think it is much logic behind this one either, it is more a question of lack of knowledge and experience. I am not an experienced ebay user or I don't have much knowledge of what to search for.
With this new information I will try to find an more appropriate one (maybe I will sneak in to the swedish-forum to see if I can find it the lazy way )
Edit: You were too fast with posting the link ( thank you for serving me this way on a friday)

Then keep an eye out... If you can get one shipped in the US under $60, it's a steal... under $70, is a good buy...
But first set up your account here, www.jetcarrier.com so you get a US shipping adress... That takes care of the eBay sellers that charge you an arm and a leg because you are outside the US... An R/R cost 179:- air, plus crap...
www.easternbeaver.com for the connectors, I get them "naked" and do the rest myself, you can get them with cables if you lack the tools, and knowhow...

Hi
Tweety, do you think this one would be OK? 07 KAWASAKI ZX14A ZX14 ZX 14 REGULATOR RECTIFIER | eBay
I think it should be OK according to your extended tread about MOSFET R/R, but I just want you to confirm the picked part
Happy easter holliday!
