Overcharged Battery

Would of wise.... When putting the whole front end back together after replacing the steering bearings, remember to fully plug in all electrical.

After riding hard yesterday I found that my battery was getting overcharged. With the smell of sulfur and a high pitch tone coming from under the seat it got me worried. Well with further investigating I found that my Headlight came unplugged causing the current that should have been going to it, went right back into the battery? Nope wrong again...........

I am pretty sure you are diagnosing this wrong.

An uplugged headlight should not cause this, more likely your regulator/rectifier is failing. This component is meant to control current in the charging system.

Put a meter on your battery with the bike running and unplug the headlight and note differences. Same reason going to hi beam wont drain the battery, nor will turn signals.

+ a million. Replace that R/R. Your battery should not rely on external draw to operate properly. If operating correctly, the charging system will work with everything unplugged from it.

Alright, I put a meter on it. At idle it rises above 15 and with RPM's at 2500 it shows 18+.... Bad R/R?

Is this the silly political season?

Yep, bad R/R. Gonna toast the battery.

OK, pulled the regulator and tested all top three prongs all test in the 40's. But the thing that I found is the plug for the regulator is melted on the top middle and right.....

Any Clues??????

Classic r/r failure. Replace with a MOSFET unit if you can. Very common on this bike. Looked something like this, but maybe more?

Thank you everyone. Yes my plug looked worst then that. Could not afford new unit, so for now I replaced it with heat resistant female connectors with silver solder on the ends of the wires. All numbers are in the norm.

So yeah its toast. Also go to eastern beaver and replace that whole plug cuz its also done.

So...........................DO A SEARCH

(hadda say it) for the R/R or regulator rectifier on this forum because there is hours of info on it.

You want to replace it with a mofset one (NOT a stock one). I used one from an R1 like a lot of guys but other options abound.

15-18 is obviously way too high
