OEM CCT replacements

OEM CCT replacements
I've been reading old posts on OEM vs Manual CCTs. The information is very helpful. I'm leaning towards the OEM. Most of the threads are for manual CCT replacement and don't elaborate on installing OEM. If I order the stock parts, do I also need the little caps that go on the end of the pushers? I know I need gaskets. The parts breakdown doesn't show it in "kit" form. Also, my bike falls into the later serial number run and it's a different part number. What is the difference? Thanks. And sorry for yet another CCT question.

Just reusue the end caps if you plan on fitting OEM CCTs. You'll also need to buy or make the special tool to install them.
Yes the CCT part no. changed mid-production but there is no readily discernible difference so even new OEM CCTs aren't guaranteed to be risk free.

At a minimum, if you are against fitting MCCTs, I strongly recommend doing at least do the fail safe stopper mod, so if the spring goes in the CCT mechanism there's something to stop the tensioner completely retracting thus allowing you to limp home without catastrophic damage.

Ron Ayers lists OEM CCT's at about $90 each with the gasket. You can get two manual CCT's for roughly the cost of one OEM tensioner. Once installed and adjusted properly, manual CCT's are bulletproof. They never need to be replaced.
Some people may prefer OEM but I don't see any significant advantage to them. In any case, it's your bike and your money.

Did you find in your search that you can retrofit the OEM CCT housings to make them MCCTs for less than $15? I can provide more info if needed. It can be done with a hand drill, and an adjustable wrench to hold the CCT housing while you drill and tap it. (Not the ideal way I know, but it gets it done if you don't have a vice and drill press

www.vtr1000.org ? View topic - Manual Cam Chain Tensioner Installation Guide (MCCT's)
Read this through a few times, gather the tools all before embarking on the installation.
A good time to also fit a front cylinder vacuum take-off while you've got the airbox off for easy carb balancing. > www.vtr1000.org ? View topic - How to balance your carbs

(I used fully polished hardware, and welded the acorn nut to the long hex bolt so it can't come loose inside the engine):
x2 M8-1.25 x 140 Hex Head Bolts (fully threaded)
x2 M8-1.25 Acorn Nuts
x2 M8-1.25 Flange Nuts
x2 M8-1.25 NyLock Nuts
M8-1.25 Tap
New gaskets
That short list will cost very little, and is cheap insurance. I used the "Short way" to install them.
Here are pictures of the assembly from the for sale thread: https://www.superhawkforum.com/forums/classifieds-32/mcct-made-stock-cct-housing-stainless-$37-shipped-31210/
