Is it my regulator or stator?

So last weekend I got on my bike and took a ride. Started fine made a few stops with no issues. I got to my 3rd stop and when I started my bike my starter sounded odd. Didn't think anything of it. I kept riding. While riding I lost all power to my gauges but the bike ran fine. About 10 miles later I got my gauges back. Made a few more stops and had no problem. I rode it home and drove the cage to work all week. Rode the bike yesterday and about 20 miles in I lost my gauges again. I pulled over and stopped. Turned the bike off and had no power. It would not restart. I get it home via truck and put the charger on it and it runs like it should. It seems to be a charging issue. I replaced the R/R last year with a used stocker! In a pinch 60 miles from home. So I know this one is probably shot as well. But want to make sure I replace the proper part instead of everything.

Was your replacement R/R a stock like-for-like unfinned one? if so try a later upgraded finned version.

Another thing to check is if the battery connections are nice and clean and tight, as they can vibrate loose causing intermittent total electrical failure.

I would say 94.6% that its the RR. Get an R1 unit. They are real beefy.

The r/r story is funny but yeah it's a like for like. R/r is where I planned to start.

You could test things to be sure. page 315 section 16-8 for that stator and R/R...or read my thread. I'm going through a similar issue.
Good luck!

OH an the R1 unit smokinjoe talks about is legit..you want something with a 'FH' prefix in the mfg. p/n

Check your battery too, or even better try it with another battery.

I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago. The battery was donw so i charged it. Starte the bike hardly the let run for some minutes and shut it of to take my helmet and gear. Next time i hit the start button all the lights went out and the bike was dead. Recharched the battery and the light were going on and off but the starter wolud not run. The battery showed 12,9-13,2 Volts so i checked the whole wiring + the R/R. There was nothing wrong. I frined brought his battery, we put it on and the bike was alive again
