the machine shop fed up
so i finally got home and was able to start the assembly of my new motornoticed ... the machine shop set the piston to wall clearance to .003 je said it should be .0025... they also did a shitty hone on it and you can barely see the cross hatches it will need to be re honed... my question is what are my options??? as i see it i have 3
1 new pistons, 2 new sleves, 3 new motor... these are oversized as it is how much over can it go? one of my buddies said scunce the pistons arent coated coating them now may be enough to take up the extra space??? didnt quite sound right to me but if it could be the easiest solution... i will be holding the shop responsible for what ever i have to do now but i want to tell them what i want not ask them for the options...

The best option would be to find a CCT wercked engine and buy the cylinders or the whole thing, re-drill and hone somewhere else where they know how to change honing stones, go to local racing forums or local track and ask them where they have their engine prepped.
If you intend to push this thing hard, better have it done the right way and imagine you good nights of sleep you'll loose having things half assed.

believe me im not half assing anything... if i bougt a wrecked engine i cant just use the top half right?? i assume if you try to use different 2 different cases youre asking for trouble due to the main bearings correct?? i will not put a motor together that isnt right i cant be running hard and sieze the thing at over 80 mph... not happening period!!! wouldnt it be easier just to go another size up?? i already did all of my clearances for the bearings and if i get another motor ill have to use new ones...

You are correct. ALWAYS keep crankcase halves together....that is how they were finish machined at the factory.

Damn it I never dissassembled the whole engine, I thought that the cylinders where bolted to the upper block, my mistake.
Honestly I would worry more about the glazed hone than the clearance itself, maybe ask how much they need to take off to get rid of the mirror, then ask JE about the new predicted clearance.
But getting it right will bring peace of mind, this is priceless.

the problem wasnt the half thou, its the possible 2 thou more that a new shop may have to work out the tool marks and put new hatches... i wasnt clear about how bad the job was sorry... there was a tool mark left in the rear cylinder that you can definately feel and he honed it to almost mirror finish... if its 2 thou and then the half that its already over thats double the spec... the skirts/cylinders will wear from piston slap, the rings may not seat properly... i dont know how the coatings are or how they hold up im probibly paranoid but i want it to be 100% ive spent too much time and money for it not to be right when its done...
i already had these pistons made from je and went .020 over i dont know how much further i can go safely so i just got the new cases.

I would get the machinist's approval for replacement costs, and then buy another set of cases. Make them machine the next set of cases as well, with a warning that if it is not right they will keep paying until it is right.
You paid good money to get the job done properly. Why tolerate crappy work? The extra clearance is possibly acceptable, but the machine mark and the obvious hone to get rid of the mark is definitely not acceptable.

the guy is a total dick made me show him all the paperwork then tells me je fucked up and the clearance is .0035 and hes a little tight... he wants to re hone it and give it back... i got the new cases and new machinist im more worried about getting the motor done right this time than about him paying for the cases... this guy will get his, but i have more important things goin on right now... im moving from nj to cali ive already pushed it back for the bike and im not doing it again im leaving monday!! im sure karma will get him...

Maybe you should let him hone them so you'll have them as a backup in case you don't like the fitment of your internals in the new cases...my 2 cents
