Yeah, 48s at your elevation is way too rich. 42s are too lean. I think 45s are right and then you can tweak it with the mixture screws. Is it still hanging up?

ohh yeah, but I've noticed that my buddies '02 does the same thing... without the lowend stumble a crappy cold starting. Perhaps the idle hang is somthing that comes with the so called "updated" ECU & ICM.....?

For me to tear the valve covers off again to check the cam timing would just be like beating a dead horse. It is a very simple procedure that any motorcycle owner would benefit from knowing (i.e. valve clearance check and adjustment). I definitely appreciate all suggestions, just thought I'd give some background info.
Fair comment, after all you know your mechanical knowledge better than anyone!

I'll say it again. The mixture changes when the air cutoff valve opens, changing the idle speed. Your friends bike does the same thing. The off idle stumble is a different problem. Solve them one at a time.

But I also swapped carb with my buddies '98 and had the same issue, his runs as smooth as glass. I keep overlooking the fact they all the problems might not be related... just seems odd to me that a low mileage VTR would have multiple issues. Must have been built on a Friday...
