Well, I have had one on my truck for almost 10 years [4x4 dakota offroad alot] and I have never had a problem. Besides if I am in the ditch and hitting something *that* hard, I have worse problems than if I need to replace an oil sump.

Actually I don't think you need to hit anything hard to break it... As far as I can see it sticks out far enough to catch in dirt if you lay the bike down on soft ground... And that would probably be enough to strip the threads, considering that it's an almost 90 degree angle, giving it plenty of leverage... Still interesting though...

After having the pan off and seeing how thin it really is, I agree it would get ripped right off if you ever laid the bike down.
I would also be worried that even a hit by some road debris would possible crack the pan. It would have to be kind of big but why take the chance.
