exhaust and filter ?

i have a high mount leo vince exhaust on my vtr. the bike smells like it runs rich, i will be checking the plugs later this week. my air filter needs replaced, so i am wondering what to go with. i have seen people having issues with getting it to run right with the k&n, is that because it is to rich or lean. i am still on stock jets, and money is a big issue. any advice is appreciated.

If you are indeed running rich with stock jetting and leo vince, I don't know what it could be but a clogged air filter. An OEM filter costs about half as much as a K&N or a BMC and is good for another 12,000 miles. If money is an issue and you don't feel like buying a jet kit and pulling your carbs multiple times, I'd just buy a new Honda air filter.

I have stock jetting with a K&N, seems to run perfectly and its reuseable.

Just my $.02

It would seem that there would be ONE setting for jets, kits, pipes, that works but apparently that's not the case. Some have luck running KN and stock stuff but the rule of thumb is freer flowing cans means leaner running. Freer flowing air filter such as KN, means a bit more air flowing thru carbs...which SHOULDN"T change mixture but in practice...does. Dirty filter can restrict flow and cause richer running. The answer? Run a new stocker and see how she runs...do plug checks with new plugs at 1/2 throttle and WFO.
Still rich? Get a KN and check again...and again.

...and by the looks of your signature you still have stock exhaust???

It's likely that you don't require jetting since the restrictive stock muffler is limiting at this point. It's not going to pump much more air due to the backpressure.
