Okay, Lots and lots of posts here about CCT's. The why's, how to's and everything inbetween yet one thing is still unclear. Is it completely necassary to replace them if they aren't failing? Hopefully enough people will chime in and we'll see a picture of who's replaced them when hearing their stock CCT's start to go, who's replaced them just as a precautionary measure and who had the stock one's fail (too late). This post may be beating a dead horse so if it is, I apologize.

98 SuperHawk
Already had them replaced once by Big Red under warranty with the newer OEM version. Still occasionally had the loud chain slap chatter.
Found my APE's used on ebay for $50 to the door, so i figured i better replace them before i had to do major engine work.
Old saying Pay me now, or Pay me later.
Why not, fix what ain't broke and forget about it for good or i guess you can wait and see...... It's a known issue, has failed on lots of VTR's and makes since to fix it first.

I went in at 16K miles to check valve clearance (which was within spec!)so I put the manuals CCTs on then...gives me piece of mind and nice bling factor!
Anybody in the mkt for a used set of 2002 auto CCTs? LOL!

IMHO i think the early models showed more signs of the noise than the later ones. I know my friends 97 model was terribly loud and my 98 wasn't much quiter even after the upgraded Honda Auto CCT. Mine made slap noise up until i replaced them with better non-Honda Product.
For what its worth its not just the VTR, Honda had issues as well with the same Auto-CCT on the CBR900's and Suzuki had it on several of their bikes including the early DRZ400 dirt bike.
It's just a crappy way to keep the chain tight. The Auto-rachet deal lets go and the tensioner backs out, then auto re-adjusts. Hopefully before it jumps a tooth and destroys the engine.
Besides the APE Red Anodized CCT's add more bling bling to your ride.
There are two types of riders, those who just turn the key and hit the button and ride and those who do the same, but enjoy the mechanical tinkering side as well.

Thumper, I think you're thinking of a different CCT from another one of the Big Four. The Honda one doesn't ratchet. It uses the principle of friction combined with spring force to keep tension on the bar and prevent it from backing out.

have nearly 50K on the original, never rattles. if she blows, she blows. i need an excuse to port and polish the heads and bump up the compression anyways, and get bigger cams, or buy a 08 CBR1000rr and never ever need more power again.

I stand corrected, Thanks Hawkrider. I went and took one a part to see how the thing works. Crazy design.

I'm so used to my "tanks" I'm not sure I could every get comfy on an I4 and sound like all the other squids on the boulevard.
My VTR doesn't sound bad - it shakes the ground! You can feel it coming.
The VFR with it's high-mount D&D sounds like a Nascar racer.
Neither one is a Herdley, but everybody has good comments no matter where I roll up.

I'm considering doing a precautionary swap, but to be honest the hassle of a valve check is putting me off. I'm just not sure I'll have time to do it all and need my bike for getting to work.
So is it possible to change the CCTs without doing the valves at the same time? According to the Haynes manual it's an easy new-for-old swap.

I think that as a precautionary measure, it's not the most expensive one in the world to perform. That is, weighed against the cost and down time of having an internally damaged motor. I have 28k on my hawk on the stock ccts, and have experienced no noise or problems yet. Will I change to manual ccts? Probably. But as of right now I don't see the need.

I replaced mine without any obvious failure. The engine had 32,000 miles on it and it was time for a valve check anyway, so I figured since I was going to be in there might as well switch them out. The po had a valve adjustment at the first recommended interval and I am guessing the mechanic replaced the front cyclinder auto cct because it had the red dot of the later auto cct and the back cylinder had the white dot of the earlier auto cct(this is a '98 model). Engine noise before I replaced the cct's wasn't bad but it didn't seem as clean as it could be. After replacing them the engine sounds much smoother and less drivetrain noise. I am glad I did it and it was not hard.
