Carb Backfire?

Carb Backfire?
So I've done a little searching and I think I know what the problem is but I just want another go-round with the opinions. Running in 2nd or 3rd gear about 3K rpm at either a steady rate or accellerating gently the bike will 'burp' occasionally. I'm pretty sure it comes from just below the tank. From what I've read 3K is the point at which the carbs switch jets.
I bought the bike with aftermarket cans and a K&N but no jet kit. So is this an effect of the lack of proper jetting? Or in spite of it? I read about the PAIR valves but it's raining now and the bike is under cover -no garage, I've plans to build a bike shed- so I can't do anything right now. Any other input would be fantastic. Incedentally, I just recently registered and have been thrilled at the wealth of info on the site. So howdy.

Re: Carb Backfire?
First off welcome,My bike does the same thing but I notice it during warm-up or if I'm coming up to a stop sign at idle and burp the throttle to downshift.not real sure where it comes from but it seems to run great.

Unless you are wanting a jet kit, you should try the shim mod first. This raises the stock needles and should eliminate that 3k transistion farting. About a $1.98 at radio shack. Do a search for raising the needles or shim mod.
