Bucking Hawk
Just got a 98 hawk with the magic 31k miles on it!!!!!
It bucks often under 3k at a steady speed...
I fear its the CCTS and this sucks!!!
What do you all think it could be?
I know people talk about changing at this milage with the manual APE? CCTS.
What is the cost from the dealer to have this done?

mine does the same thing... before and after I adjusted my manual CCT's as well as checking valves. I juct chocked it up to one of those quirks. the only thing I havent done yet it sync carbs... so if you do and it goes away let me know. I just downshift and ride up around 4grand

its not an upward bucking sensation if hes talking about what mine does, I think he is. More like a cylinder didn't fire. it possibly could be timing but I think it would happen every time if it was... mine just happens every once and awhile. But it was made worst by reversing pair valves. no idea their..

If its only below 3k rpm, mine has been doing that since it was new...driveline surge. These bikes run pretty lean at idle and low rpm with stock carb settings. An ignition misfire is more likely under load.
Try downshifting to bring the rpm's up. If the bucking goes away don't worry about it, or have the carbs looked at if it bothers you. Mine runs flawlessly over 3k.

Could be a few different things but I think most likely improperly set up carbs.
Don't see how it could be CCTs. CCTs serve only one purpose- to keep the cam chains on. If they're on ( and everything else is OK) the bike runs fine. If they're off it doesn't run at all.

Mine will do it as well. It seems to do it more when it's colder outside and I going slowly through town. It's always done it, I was told it was due to the motor running too lean at the lower rpm's. It goes away at the higher speeds.

Get some seafoam in the tank and see if it clears up. I bought mine wrecked and had been sitting for a year and a half or so. I fgured it was the carbs so put about a half a cans worth of seafoam in the gas about two tanks worth and it runs like a champ ever since! I've got her up to just shy of 160mph without a stutter or hesitation...

your problem could be slack in the cam chain like you mentioned. i dont have a twin but 954. but a lot oof my bikes lurching went away with the ape. there is slack in the drive chain which always causes a little buck. slack in the cam chain will do it too (even just a bit)

If you have a dynojet kit drop the needle clip one notch lower, if you have a stocker shim the needle (pull the needle away from the seat) It will stop to fart in the intake

Well I guess I will find out soon enough.
I think the CCT went last week. I am going to build a platform to pull the front head off and see what damage there is. See my other post about either breaking the chain or cct in the front cylinder.
