Bike upright died on me today

I was out for a ride, nothing crazy. During the ride, the bike just went dead. All electrical dead. No lights, nothing. I pulled over poped off the seat, checked the battery, terminals are tight. Looked over all the fuses. all good.

I need some help here guys, I am searching too. so any help would be great.

And pushing the 'hawk 5+ miles is a bitch when it hot and humid, incase any of you guys were wondering

Thanks
Tom

r/r ...Regulator/rectifier

Check voltage across the battery. If the Battery is dead, then you were running off the battery and not the *alternator because the R/R died.. and the battery just ran out of juice.

This is such a common thing that they made a sticky to swap to another type of R/R.. https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...ad.php?t=14380
They fail SO often

Tbone. I get off at 6 pm and I work on the USS Constitution. I can stop by after work and take a look. I'm no pro master mechanic but maybe an extra set of eyes can help figure out the issue. Cleveland is probably dead on with the R/R issue. I'd check that first.

Definitely sounds like the r/r.

Do some searching and you'll find instructions and recommendations. I think the most popular consensus is to use an R1 r/r swap.

I tore teh back of the bike off, and checked the main fuse. Turned out to be blown. i replaced it. I reinstalled all the wiring and hit the key, instantly blew that fuse as well.

I looked at the RR and it apears to have leaked or melted at some point. i will replace that( prob with the R1/6 unit) and retry.

Any ideas at this point?

Thanks
Tom

Check for a loose ground or short in the wiring.Im pretty sure the bike would run with a bad R/R

that is going to have to wait a few days. I will tare the wiring apart probably on friday (with any luck) and maybe Ill come up with something.

Will the bike run with the RR disconnected? that way i can just leave it unplugged while diagnosing the issue.

I don't think a bad R/R would blow the main fuse.Unless it's real bad.I had one that ozed gunk And it would still run, just didn't charge the battery. But what ever is blowing the main could damage the R/R.You dont want to put a new one on only to fry it too.Check all connections, look for wires that got hot.More than likely the problem is under the seat/ tail out in the open.and obvious once you find it.Time to buy a multi-meter
good luck

I took a quick look, the RR was oozing alot of stuff. I disconnected it, then I replaced the main fuse. I now get full electrical and it will run. I am now looking for an R1/6 RR

Thanks for the help guys

The R/R Honda used is very prone to failure but the later design with the cooling fins (2001 up) seems more robust. In comparison the R/R on my Suzuki DR350 dual sport is easily double the size of the Honda unit... Glad to hear its an easy fix for you.

Glad your R/R didnt fry your cdi/ign/cluster Etc.....That usually happens when your bike Downright dies on ya as opposed to upright dieing.......
