98 VTR only starts in neutral

Hey guys. I have a 1998 VTR 1000 and of late the bike will only start in neutral. If it cuts off I have to put the bike in neutral to start it. Any suggestions on what the problem may be?

Just to get this question out of the way.....Are you holding in the clutch when you are trying to start it while in gear?

If your stand is down and you're in gear it won't turn over (due to interruptor on stand). If the stand is up and it still won't turn over, it could be that your clutch is dragging and/or your battery is weak.

Sounds like a saftey switch, clutch or side stand.

-1 ... If the side-stand switch was hanging up, then the bike would start in neutral and then as soon as the transmission is engaged the engine would die, thus making the bike unusable... +2 on the clutch switch

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I was doing some searching because mine does this same thing. I was wondering if this was a normal thing the VTR did as I'm a new owner. I'll look into those possible problem areas mentioned above. It's not a big immediate issue to me, but I would like it resolved.

If it is a bad saftey switch it is not just a SH problem, more like a common problem with that type of switch.

Check your wiring going into the switch. I about replaced it, then I realized I'm an idiot and one of the wires came loose when I had the clip-ons off. Don't know how much Honda will want for that switch, but Granger or someone like that may have the same switch for a lot less. It would just take some digging. I guess this is probably a normally open switch.

Just reporting back on mine, it turned out to be the clutch electrical connectors weren't ..... well... um.... connected . I figure they became disonnected in the process of strapping the bike down when I bought it from the previous owner. Simple fix and knew it had to be something like that LOL. As mentioned, check your wiring and connectors .

I think mine has been disabled. it starts in any gear, clutch in or not. brother tried to fire it up and he's not as bike savvy as I am, kinda scared him a little the time i had forgotten to put it in neutral when i parked.

Forgot to post what I found on this. Everything was plugged in and I couldnt figure it out. After a few days I remembered that I changed the levers about the same time the problem started happening. I removed the aftermarket (found on EBAY) lever and compaired it to the stock one and sure enough it was slightly different. I put the stock one back on and it started in gear. I put the aftermarket back on and you guessed it, no start. There is very little difference but I found a fix. I had adjusted the lever closer to the bar because, well, thats how I like them. Just for the hell of it I adjusted the aftermarket lever out further and now it start in gear.
