98 vtr NOT running smooth now..
I got my carb boots in yesterday and i no longer have an intermident missfire!!! bike ran 25 minutes and had no failure, then i did it again. nothing.. which is good!
however, dispite the great news that my problem seems to be fixed, now my bike is running TERRIBLE!! its idles very rough like the cylinders are running different.
im going to take a stab and say the carbs need to be adjusted and/or synchronized?? i messed a little bit with the idle adjustments for both, and i could smooth it a little bit but then it was running bad at higher RPMs. i noticed that when i reved it a bit the slides were moving back and forth very hard. After that, i reinstalled the air box to see if that made a difference. maybe a little bit? it was hard to tell.
well, ill say something is probably out of adjustment because i disonected the throttle cable and moved those carbs all over the place to get those boots on
can anyone that knows more than me about our VTRs help me out? maybe its a quick fix. im not too good with carburation...

...Idle adjustment for BOTH carbs??? There is only ONE idle adjustment. If you were messing with two screws then you were adjusting synchonization, and now it definitely needs to be synced. Also, check that you hooked everything back up correctly - vacuum line to BACK of petcock, PAIR hoses installed correctly if still in use, TPS connector connected, airbox seated fully, etc.

well... all the lines are correct. today, it actually seems to be running much better. i dont know why. but it is still not as good as it was before i tore the bike down to replace carb boots. is it just my carb sync?
when i take off easy, it sputters a little bit, sounds like its running on one cyclinder a little bit. i am pretty sure it feels like one cyclinder running faster than the other? not 100% sure though.
As i go down the street, and get on it a little bit, it clears up pretty nice.
When i let off of the throttle, it spitters and sputters again, way worse than it used to when i didnt have any problems!! i rode 8000 miles over last summer, i dont think i forgot the amount it does that when i let off. i know it is slightly the nature of the bike but its way worse than it was now.
COULD this be carb sync? i dont have the tools to do it

I assume you replaced the intake boots becuase of an air leak...? If so were the carbs sync'd while there was a leak? If so, then they were sync'd with compensation for the intake leak... They will have to be re-sync'd. A carb sync on a VTR is a rather simple procedure that can be done without removing any body panels or even flipping up the gas tank. I can't imagine that your local dealership would charge you more than an hours labor for it.
