I have been working on these bikes since 1998, and go back to Greg Nemish's original forum RunLevelZero that eventually morphed into this forum.
So I know very well from where I speak.
That is, do not even start the engine without the OEM plastics on, AND with at least 2 large air recirculation fans blowing on the engine at 90 degree vortices, OR it will quickly melt down into a smoldering lump of aluminum!!!
April is less than 7 months away.

Plenty of people run these bikes naked. That said, others have trouble cooling, presumably in warmer climates or due to other cooling issues, so your mileage may vary, but you're not going to melt down.

If you haven't already, you do want to ensure the fan is working properly. When I bought a '98 brand new back in 1999, it overheated on the way home from the dealer (they had just taken it out of the crate) with about 50 miles on it because, according to them after I brought it back, the fan switch was bad.
