180 main, maxed out needle and still lean!?
hey guys, wondering if i can get some thoughts, my sh has a 182k jet in for the rear cyl, and a 180k in the front, 50k slow speed jet in both, pilot screw 3.5 turns out in both carbs, and the needles raised all the way up (bottom clip) with a .020" shim under it! not sure if it has an aftermarket jet kit, the jets say factory on them, dont know if thats factory honda or factory pro? seems to me it should be getting plenty of fuel, right? well its not, stumbles and stutters from 3000 revs up, plugs are white. i am running shortened micron race cans, and a bmc race filter, im wondering if this sounds normal, and i just need bigger jets & more fuel, or if i should be looking for vaccum/air leaks, maybe the 10 year old o-rings & gaskets are suspect?

Well the filter may be causing it to lean out. Try a stock filter. Also you need to sync the carbs each time you play with them. Mine were running like crap and after a sync we leaned her right out and made lots of power and it was clean. Id start with one thing at a time. Let the bike idle for a while see if it fouls the plugs qnd see how it smells. What elevation are you at? You low and mid sounds like it may be way too rich for astock motor. Also I believe the stock needles don't have clip positions so you likely have aftermarkets. Ride around at mid throttle for an hour check theplugs then it'll help determine if your needles are set right. If they are then go out and beat on her and if they white your too lean up top.
Also your rear main needs to be one step higher than front to cool that rear cylinder.

Seems we have another victim of the nice and shiny airfilter... A K&N or BMC Race filter will never ever, in a million years work on a stock engine... It's just not going to happen... Here whoever made the settings tried drowning the problem in fuel, but that usually only makes it worse... Yes, you can go even richer and make it run a tad better... But it's not going to be pretty...
"factory" on the jets does indeed mean Factory Pro, Honda doesn't mark them that way for sure, and as uchi said, no clips on a stock needle...

Yup I just went through a carb nightmare. The previous mechanic had put 5 shims on the needles trying to solve a mid range hesitation. Put a stock filter in and see how she runs.
Also you mentioned you have a 182 jet. Dynojet goes in increments of 5. Not sure about factory pro kits. Id order a few jets. 180 185 190 and go from there. Start
180 front 185 rear. And if its still go 185 front 190 rear. It all depends on elevation and how well those pipes flow.
