04-02-11 The smell of exhaust is like the smell of sex, but with a bike.

so I have a new pressing problem; what seems to be the result of my earlier petcock problems :

02-25-11 Holy Freaking crap Go Eco Green Machines screwed up big time. « Just a Geek On a Bike

and

https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...running-24812/

It is allot of reading lol.

Over the last few days I noticed a new sound from my exhaust. Also a very strong exhaust smell all over me. It turns out that I am leaking a significant amount of exhaust gas from somewhere behind my rear shock. I can feel it blowing with my hand when I put it back there. I reek of exhaust! I like to say tho that it is like the smell of sex, but with a bike. anyways I will take a video at my 3 o'clock lunch brake so you can see what I mean. If I stand behind my bike while its running and stick my hands near the mufflers the left one blows out hot air and the right one blows much cooler air with less force. There is also some leakage from the exhaust joints beneath the engine. If you recall from my first post with the petcock problems these are the joints where fuel/oil were leaking from.

Xtreme Powersports' 2000 Honda Street Bike VTR1000F SUPER HAWK Parts List

If I had to guess I would say that I need to replace all the #6 on that part list. also I think the big leak is from the joint of #10 and #1. also the joint of #1 and #3 seem to be leaking.

any advise on removing the exhaust system? Is there anything I should look out for?
Should I buy every gasket on the list and replace them all?
Do I need to warm up the system before removing it?
Will this require allot of force?
should I remove the fairings?
I would like to clean up the pipes if I have them off, what should I use to do this?

I do have a swingarm stand now so life should be easier, I know that swapping out the wiring harness was much easier with the stand.

This is normal.

You will need 2 ea #2 and 3 ea #6 and maybe the clamps if they are in bad shape.

A better look at the bolts and clamps

It was mentioned on another forum that these bolts and clamps may not be correct. Also the welds may be wrong. Do the clamps look out of place?

They are in the right place, they are just shot is all.

Though after looking at the pics again, the rear header connection is not pushed all the way up like it should be and the whole thing is not seated correctly but you will fix all that when you install the new carbon gaskets.

They are aftermarket clamps on the slip ons, so get a stock one for where the rear header joins together and either contact the manufacturer of you slip ons for some clamps like you have now or you probably could use the stock clamps with no real issue but they do need to be replaced.

The hearer itself, just take some coarse grade scotch bright and start scrubbing until it turns silver......

The mid pipes look pretty bad, so no point it trying to save the finish, might as well just take the scotch bright to them also.

After replacing those clamps you might want to clean and lube your chain.

Not one of my favorite things to do, but yours looks pretty dry.

Lol on tampsportbikes I am getting grilled about that. I have sprayed lube on her, but not scrubbed her. I planned on replacing that chain+sprockets early on but everything else came up and cost $$$ I bought a proper cleaning brush yesterday and am gonna rub her down tomorrow.

I pretty much just clean mine with rags, spray the lube on there, then wipe again with rags. I do that about every 500 or so miles.

I just read on the D.I.D. website last week that they recommend that you never use any kind of brush, even with nylon bristles, to clean an O-ring chain. I used a soft toothbrush once several years ago, while cleaning my wife's chain with kerosene. That was such a mess that I never tried it again.

My 3 previous bikes over the last 30 years were all shaft drive, so I'm no expert.
