Nothing better to do!!
So I am driving south bound on I-5 this morning and its raining out. I am riding behind a trucker next to the carpool lane. All is going well until this trucker starts to swerve into the carpool lane and back into my lane. I told myself screw this and I dropped down into 4th and punched it to pass him. As I am passing the truck in the carpool lane I blow pass a stater and didnt realize it until he was behind me with his sex lights on. I get pulled over. He asks for the usual. Next thing I know he is bitching me out for doing 95 in a 60. I tried to explain that I was passing the semi due to the driver swerving all over the place. To no avail, I get a 300 dollar ticket. He threatened to impound my bike and take me to jail for reckless driving. He told me to have a nice day. ME being the smart *** I am. I told him that he had nothing better to do put sit with his lazer gun and eat doughnuts on the side of the road. He got mad told me to watch myself. But this time I am furious so I continued to be a smart *** and looked around at my self and told the cop I am fine but ill look at myself every now and then to keep watch and make sure my body didnt run off with out me. I hate cops. Cant do anything better but to pull over me cause I was trying to pass a semi so I wouldnt be 18 wheeler meat. Oh well Ill just fight it in court. Here is the thing if I fight it though....this is my first ticket in almost two years. Come feb. it will be two years. But my record for the previous three years includes 15 traffic infractions mainly for no insurance on a car and for speeding, etc. Do you guys think I stand a chance at winning if I explain to the judge what my intentions were for passing so quickly in a polite manner??? I am talking to a judge here. LOL!!! Cops i dont care the worst they can do is book me on stupid reasons. been there before. Had the case thrown out cause the judge thought that what the cop did was unnessacary. Sorry for the long post. Just got my blood boiling that the cop was to stupid to comprehend my actions.

Got stopped by an alumni on my way home from work late last summer. A bit stern at first when he asked "you know why I'm stopping you?" Of course when I take my helmet off I look like most of these cops dads! I say "speeding?". And then he's...and tailgating, passing on the right, lane changes without signals. Told him being around cars makes me nervous and he said I probably make them nervous too. Ran me and I came up clean cause I got lucky a couple years ago too. Let me go with a slightly condescending "don't make me have to scrape you up off this highway". Figure I skated on about $400 or so in fines. I'm an outlaw in alot of ways and no fan of the Po's, but I get that these are humans trying to do some job. I usually have a decent experience with one on one interactions, but I have had several encounters with a group of cops and thats when the ******* **** has really come out. Hang in there and always fight it because you never know what variables are going to come into play.

You are pretty much screwed and really need to learn the art of working with the cop, ESPECIALLY if he is a state trooper.
The cop is going to write a ticket. He needs tickets and he did clock you at 95. Also remember that he gets overtime to go to court. The common way to get out of this is to plead not guilty on the ticket, go in early on your court date a see the cop to discuss a plea. Normaly the cop does't care to screw you and will work with you. Assuming you didn't already **** him off.
For the most part the judge is not going to go against the cop. State troopers bring his court cash. If the judge starts tossing out troopers tickets then troopers will stop writing them in that jurisdiction.
My experience is NY, but I bet Washington is similar. I've had my share of tickets and my best friend was a NYS trooper for many years.
Next time, no matter how hard, be nice to the cop - like the customer, he is always right

Doubt a judge will appreciate you ramping up to 95 mph. He'll want to know why you didn't brake and change lanes.

That sucks. I recently got pulled over for "speeding." I was doing 45 or 50 in a 30. It's a 4 lane road-a real speed trap, and a mile or two down the road the speed limit changes to 45. I have a bit better driving record than you do, and while I completely understand your frustration, like my dad (a former cop) always told me, you can't win an argument with a cop. So I simply was honest and 1) apologized and told him I didn't see the sign, and 2)apologized and told him I couldn't afford the ticket and could he do anything to help me. I told him I had never had a speeding ticket in my life (true, lucky, but true). He looked at me and told me to go to court and he would dismiss it for me. I was kinda shocked but I guess I got lucky and found a nice guy. He said since he gave a ticket to the other guy who was riding MY *** he had to give one to me, but he'd take care of it. I've been nice to cops before and got nowhere, but it never hurts to try.

Well, only $300 dollars huh? Last time I got a ticket 73 in a 55 it cost me $270. I think the best thing for you to hope for is a reduction. I doubt it will be dismissed. Be glad he didn't give you a ticket for reckless driving, and for god sakes don't ever speed like that on I-5.
#8
I think you are screwed as well, but going for a reduction is a good idea.
I got ticketed in 1966 for entering a left turn lane early (there were 2 others in front of me doing the same, 2 motorcycle cops pulled all 3 of us over). I was on my way to classes at Fullerton College. It's called driving on a painted divider.
I went to court and pled guilty with explanation (you can't plead NOT guilty if he got you for 95). I said that I and the others pulled into the left turn lane early to avoid getting rear ended by the cars screaming along Harbor Boulevard. He reduced my fine from $30 to $10, so it was worth it. That would be $100 for you if the judge used the same ratio.
What sucked was that I got a speeding ticket a short time later, and that was my 3rd moving violation in a year, so my license was suspended for 30 days. I drove very conservatively during those 30 days.
Oh, and I have pled with cops twice in years past, and got off with a warning. One other time I was so pissed off I called the cop an *******. He just laughed and handed me the ticket. Of course I was almost 40 at the time and the cop looked like a rookie.

Its just bull monkey. I didnt hit the brake because either way I was doing the speed limit before I passed the trucker and had to pass either way. Oh well. I guess thats what I get for trying to keep my *** alive. Oh and that brings me to another point. Dont get so many infractions. Local and state authorities will start to remember your name and ride like they do me. Luckly this stater didnt know me but he will now. So that my speel to all. I hate it whaen Im driving and get pulled over just cause the cop knows my ride and who I am. then trys to bull **** with me like ive done something wrong. Its like if i didnt do anything wrong dont waste your time trying to find **** that you could get me for. use that time to get the ppl that really need to be pulled over like the crazy truckers that swerve everywhere or use it to eat a doughnut.
There was one time I tried to get out of a ticket on my 85 V65 Sabre. I told the cop that i would race him and if i won he let the ticket go and if he won he could get me for my infraction. He said ok and I was like right on. Then he told me that I would be racing a heli and I said screw that. So i just bs with him and still got the ticket. I am usually nice to authorities due to being stupid when i was 18 and getting a record. But today was just BS like I said. And 1966 damn showing your age are we??? LOL!!! I wish i could just throw a ten dollar bill at the judge and be like peace out!!! LOL!!!

Learned not to dish out attitude to authority figures decades ago. The road side is no place to argue the case, the cop is counting coup anyway.
In June '09 I got nailed on the S'hawk for 60 in a 45 and illegal lane change (no signal). Signed both tickets and declined to answer questions.
Lawyered up, paid the fee, the lane change was dismissed and the speeding was 'adjudication withheld'.
I didn't have to show up in court, the total lawyer fee and court fee was less than the total fines for both tickets and there aren't any points on my license to goose up my insurance rate.
I've got no love for the police, they aren't all 9/11 heroes, I'd rather they be there than not. But I won't play the street side head games anymore.

75 in a 35. Cop asked me if I knew why he pulled me over. Best answer is the truth followed by an apology. Most cops don't ride or like bikes. Being a smart *** only makes that worse. They make their mind up in the first 10 seconds if you deserve a break or not. They also have access to your record. I assume he was not in the forgiving mood and when he saw your record it sealed the deal. By the way, the cop let me off and actually thanked me for stopping. I guess they get the occasional runner which puts their lives in danger and further tarnishs the image of bikers.

Here in washington the authorities dont chase motorcycles anymore. its to dangerous. They will chase just a bit to get a fix on you then call in the bird to track you from there. I mean ill be honest. Sometimes on a sunny day if the traffic is clear then I will ride fast. If I happen to blow by a stater I drop it down two gears and keep going. There is no point for me to stop when i already have a good head start with him having to catch up at a stand still. I will pull over for motorcycle cops though. Cause they know how to ride!!! LOL!!!

Well , here goes.
Got a speeding ticket in August, 83 in a 65. I was on my way to the canyons on the VTR with my daughter on the back, who had been wanting to go for a ride in forever.
CHP pulled me over and told me that he had paced me as high as 86 but would write me for 83.
I tried the "can I talk you out of this" routine but he didn't care, just kept writing.
Kept my mouth shut, even after his remark of " be careful out there, these things are ticket machines" as a parting shot.
Due date was October 22nd, went in and scheduled a court date which was for January 22nd.
Showed up, along with 40 other lucky ticket holders.
25 of those were dismissed because their cop didn't show, mine was there for me and two other guys.
Judge, little white haired old lady, told everybody that was left to ask for traffic school before she heard your case since it would be unlikely that she would grant it after she found you guilty of the offense.
I felt pretty self righteous because of the 'ticket machine' comment until I saw everybody before me get nailed, no matter how good their "defense" was. And true to her word, nobody got traffic school that day........
The judge and my cop nail the two guys before me and I walk up to the bench knowing I'm screwed.
The not so nice little old lady, dressed as the judge, looks at me, smiles and says " Today is your lucky day, Officer Logan does not remember the specifics of your case, case dismissed, have a nice day".
For once I'm speechless, and keep it that way, save for saying thank you.
Moral of the story:
Don't give the cop anything to remember you by, take it to court, try to reschedule it as many times as you can and hope that the cop either doesn't show up, or if he does, doesn't remember you.
Don't show up in your riding gear, dress nicely and be polite.
I don't know how many tickets my cop wrote between August and January, but mine apparently wasn't memorable enough....

I think I told this story on another thread some time ago, but here goes:
Took a half day at work, coming home at noon, we lived in Carlsbad. I split to the front of the signal at La Costa and El Camino Real (little did I know a pair of cops in a cruiser pulled up several cars back). They see me gas it away from the signal. Nobody in front of me on La Costa which is 4 lanes for the next couple miles with really nice sweepers and no cars anywhere. It's almost 15 years ago, so I'm on my '83 BMW R100RS. I hit the sweepers hard, then turn left down the street leading to the condo we had at that time.
After making another left and approaching the driveway for the condos semi-underground parking, I see the cruiser scream around the corner 1 block behind me with his lights on. There's no question who he's after. If I'd known he was pursuing me, I could have gassed it into the parking and been out of sight.
So he pulls into the parking behind me as I'm getting off my bike. I'm almost 50 at the time, and both cops are not yet 25. He says "I didn't think I'd catch you. I never got close enough to clock you, but you must have been doing at least 90" (He guessed well, but I didn't tell him that). If I recall, he wrote me for 60 in a 45.
The kicker and punch line is: The 3rd time he asked me why I was riding so fast (I didn't answer the first 2 times), I said "You've never ridden a motorcycle, have you?" and I smiled.

Last summer I got the first (and hopefully only) ticket on my bike. I was doing 96 in a 65. Same story, I hate traffic, I got in the far right lane and gunned it. The cop took a few miles to catch me as there was a wad of traffic behind me and she was in the median.
I wasn't speeding when she caught me, she noted that. She noted that I was really courteous, and thanked me for that. Also, I'm 6'7" and I think she was maybe 5'2". She didn't believe me that I was headed to a Magic (the gathering) card game tournament that morning, so I showed her a backpack filled with cards. I told her about traffic, and staying out of it, and I was getting away from everything. Truth be told, she didn't care. 96 IS too fast in a 65. I got the ticket, and she offered me a dropped ticket from 6 to 4 points to mail it in. I didn't take it, and thought my story would matter to a judge. Looking back, being courteous prevented my bike from being towed, and me getting multiple tickets (passing in the right lane, not using signals, wreckless driving, they could have really thrown the book at me)
As the court date approached, I realized I may had given up any hope I had for a dropped ticket. 96 in a 65, 31 over, really no excuse for that. Fortunately, when I went in they were super crowded and under staffed. I was offered a 3 point "too fast for conditions" ticket. I took that in a HEARTBEAT. The lady offered the same deal for her 6 point ticket wouldn't shut up, and she almost lost her deal.
I have a driving record like you, it's 2 pages long and most of it is 5+ years ago. I pick up a ticket every couple years, just ask lots of questions when you get insurance. Like, how does 1 ticket or 2 tickets affect it? I found a pretty good deal in the stuff I have now, and am fairly confident it won't go up after this incident.
Go to court, ask courteously if there's anything you can do, take driving school if it will drop another point or two off, but unless you get that super lucky business that I've never gotten in 2 pages of tickets... plan on having a ticket with points.
Honesty really is the best policy on the side of the road, lying to a cop has far more penalties than lying to your parents, and they're bullshit meter is better than your parents!

Pal of mine shows up at the shop with a long face one afternoon about being held on the side of I35 by a County Motorcycle cop for 2 and a half hours. This section of I35 is 3-4 lanes wide - trucks are prohibited from the fast lane.
The situation: 18 wheeler starts to drift into Josh's lane - he is between the tractor and the rear duals. He nails it on his zx10 and is out of harms way in a few seconds. This guy is Marines weapons specialist so I think he knows his ride.
Once he gets there, he finds a county mounty trying to hit his kill switch as they are going down the freeway. He's cited for 110 in a 60. After much whining and crying I convince him that speed can be used as an evasive maneuver. He appears in front of the local judge and the judge agrees. You can escape by speed. Sometimes it's necessary. Every time you get stopped by a cop it was necessary.

This hawk is going to get me in some serious trouble, thats for damn sure. I got a new plug boot and went for a test ride tonight around 10pm. Met up with my roommate. was at a intersection and he pulled out and sped off and so did I. I saw a cop out of the corner of my eye but didnt think twice. Got to the gfas station and see the cop pull in the parking lot on the other side and just park. I told Brandon(roommate) "hey look a po po wiating to bust us for what ever" So we fill up and planned to evade him. I take off and then evade, no brandon. Im like **** he doesnt have his reg. its at home wet. So I turn around and look for him thinking the cop got him at the station. Nope brandons long gone and the cop blew passed me and hit the brakes and flipped a bitch. I zig zag and do the opposite blinker trick and then we race home. Not a prob. Let the heat die down cause we knew the cop put out a thing to be on the look out for our bikes.

Decide to go go karting and get the rest of our racing energy on the track out. We finish and hop on the local freeway and there is no one in sight. We start slamming gears and are doing 160 and then get off the freeway race home. No sooner than we are walking up the steps to our apt. we see a crown vic pull up and we are like **** and run in the house. the cop just sat there behind our bikes. and then sped out of the complex. The crazy thing was that the whole time we were doing 160 there was no one behind us. So we were scratching our heads trying to figure out where the hell the 5-0 came from. So my new question is. I need a spot to mount my switch to my underglows cause i cant be running wide open and playing lose the po po with my switch under my seat. it just aint cuttin it. LOL!!! Yes I know this site does NOT condone Street racing. We were just celebrating my new job that I got working at Ticketmaster!!! Sooner or later I am not going to talk my way out of the grip of the law. I Vow to all my Fellow hawkers that I will Calm down alot and keep the high speed stuff on the track for other ppls safety and for my own. this is my promise to you.

Dude Cracker, don't you have a kid? Or your girlfriend does... I can't remember but anyways I kid that depends on you. Quit fooling around with the police lest you find yourself behind bars. If they catch you evading that is a felony offense and you will do time, honestly if you were single and didn't care about the risk then fine, but there are others in your life that you going to jail for a while would really hurt. Here is the deal we all speed on roads, well most of us do me included. If you are going to live and stay out of jail then you have to be smart about where you do it. For me it is back roads, not much population not much chance of police. Just me the occasional car and phenomenal twisty road. It is very rewarding. Do I "go fast" in town, no I may speed but I keep it under 10 mph over. You can have fun out there just don't be a clown about it. The last thing we want here is to read about you killing yourself or hurting some one or going to prison. (steps off soap box).
Anyways Philip I enjoyed helping you fix your bike you seem like a decent guy I would hate to see you get hurt.

Hey man I really appreciate what you said. It means alot and yes I have a kid. That is why I vowed to the hawk community that I would stop goofin off. Liz and I had a long talk about this to. Trust me I am on her **** list. But we communicated to each other which is something we BOTH have a hard time doing. All is working out for the better.
So I took the advice of the forum and called the court house today. If I do 8 hours of community service then my ticket will be dropped. Not bad concidering I was looking at forking out 300 bucks. So I go down today to fill out all the paperwork to get started on doing my comm. service. I may be 24 and still young and stupid but give me credit for learning!!! =)

Ever wonder why a cop doesn't pull away at the same time you do after writing you a ticket? He is writing down everything you said on the back of the ticket for Court. Be careful of what you say. Only answer the questions he asks. Do not offer additional information. Do not try to talk your way out. There is a reason he pulled you over. Explainations are for Judges to hear.

I'm sure that we'll all read about crackerjack in the paper one day. I've known far too many like him and a few, the lucky ones, got to spend some time in jail. The unlucky ones I've known were put in a hole in the ground.....
