I hate thieves!
So I'm laying in bed, 5:45 AM, about to get up and get ready for work, when I hear yelling, a loud crash, and old loud truck start up and take off, then tear through the apartment complex. Just another day in the apartment complex I think, but alas, a pounding comes at the door. Its a neighbor who when leaving for work, found two guys had decided my bike should belong to them.
He tells me, he walked out his door to get in his car and found these guys with the rear end of the bike pulled up into the bed of an old truck. He yells, "What the eff are you doing?" ....What else for a criminal to do than to just let go of the bike, letting it fall from the bed of the truck, onto the asphalt and get in the truck and take off!! These guys drug the bike from inches in front of my truck, sideways!!, dragging it on a tire and kickstand for about 4 feet!!
While I'm grateful the bike is still around, its so aggravating that I have to now buy new pegs and powder coat them, repaint the fairing, deal with scratches on the exhaust, most likely replace the bar that holds up the windshield and mirrors, and we'll see what else. Poor bike.
Either these guys are just complete idiots for trying to steal the bike when its time for people to go to work.. or they grossly underestimated the 430 pound bike that stood before them, and they were out there for a while. They dropped a pair of sunglasses though so hopefully the police get something off those.

Glad they didn't get it...hats off to your neighbor for not just minding his own business.
Do you have a steel post or something solid and heavy you can chain it to with a super heavy duty chain? That's what I did for 13 years when I lived in an apartment or condo and didn't have a garage. I came out of my condo one morning in 1990 and my 4 month old Isuzu Trooper was gone, but my CB700SC Nighthawk was still there, securely chained to a steel post. I was going to ride to work that day anyway.
Covering it may help as well, with a cover that has eyelets for a lock on the bottom. I had a cover stolen once.

Yeah I always garaged it, but I recently moved. I thought about chain, alarm, etc etc, but after seeing 10 other newer, nicer, more accessible bikes at the complex I figured I was on the bottom of the hit list. Definately will have to get something now. Only thing I have to chain it too is my truck frame.. What a hassle Good news is Progressive ran the blue book for a 98 superhawk with no mods and the bike is still worth $3175 to them.

I am so paranoid about my bike at night or when I am gone at work. I also live in a apartment with out a garage and it freaks me out. My bike is an ugly bish but still shes my bish. At night I wrap a huge chain through the rear tire and kind of loop it through the frame. Just dont know how to get peace of mind.
Bike is salvaged and old so full coverage is out of the question. Ok just venting I am ok now.
Glad to hear they didnt get your bike... Total pieces of ****, I hate thieves too.

Yup, hats off to your neighbor. Wonder if hanging a laminated 8 1/2" X 11" sign saying something like: "Not worth stealing" or "Low market value" might deter those imbeciles besides the standard alarm & lock?

When I had a carport only, my '83 BMW R100RS was chained to a post with a monster chain, plus a Kryptonite U-lock, with a PVC t-fitting, through the rear wheel. (without the PVC t-fitting the Kryptonite can be broken with a long piece of pipe, from what I had heard)

I have the fairing stay/mirror bracket taking up space in my garage. I dropped mine about a month ago on the left side so it might not be in much better shape than yours, but if you want it I'm sure we can come up with something fair for both parties. PM me.

Well Insurance is cutting me a check for $1,100. Haven't seen the actual damage estimate, but seeing as I can live with some of the damage I should come out quite good on it all. I have Two Brothers Exhaust on it so I might try sanding the roughness down and buffing it a little and see how it looks.
No point in getting a new one when i'll probably do something brainless and drop it later anyway. Will at least have some money now for new ccts since it has 24,000 miles on it and perhaps a new chain and sprocket.
Does anyone have problems with thier bike alarms going off in storms? I hate that and I'd probably get fed up and shoot the bike long before a criminal tries to steal it again.

bike alarms
I work for a custom auto shop, bikes too, the best alarm I'v installed is a MERLIN 3000 system by VALET.(also what's installed on mine) Motorcycle alarms can be a bish to install, if you're not "inclined" have some one do it. One thing, make sure you/they solder and shrink all conections, no crimps connectors.

That blows...but what goes around comes around. They'll get theirs...always do. I'd rather have somebody just smack me in the face than steal/lie to me. Hopefully they'll not be back for any more of anything in your neck 'o the woods. Nice to have good neighbors, too!
