Rider Revolt and other tid bits
Well the Racing at Miller last weekend had great action on and off the track and led to more Headlines thru the past week.
On the track Honda actually won a Superbike Race albeit WSBK not AMA/DMG. It really makes me wonder what Ron TenKate knows that American Honda doesn't! Or is it simply that TenKate has built a good relationship with HRC over the last 5+ years rather than shun them (and their lease bikes) in favor of trying to go racing on the cheap as Ray Blank and American Honda did with the first CBR1000RR. Both Yamaha and Kawasaki are knocking on the podium after 1 full year of development, what's wrong with the CBR?!
There was plenty of action off the track as well. Suzuki USA strongly hinted that they were ready to pull out of AMA/DMG Racing in 09 if DMG's position didn't change. Suzuki wants the rules that were agreed to prior to DMG's takeover to go in place for the 09/10 seasons and they will not field 4 bikes (in fact they will go back to 2 bikes next year).
DMG issued a press release announcing that Mid Ohio Sports Car Course had apparently done major repairs and was now sanctioned for wet weather racing. This was met by more than a little skeptisizm amounst the riders and teams. Later in the week the rider's went to mid ohio and found that no improvements have been made nor are any underway and promptly issued their own press release annoucing that none of the Factory Riders would race in the rain at Mid Ohio..period.
DMG then issued a new press release trying to redefine what the first release was supposed to have said to people who aren't otherwise stupid. It was tortured logic to be sure, kinda reminded me of Bill Clintons " it depends on what "is" is" argument. He also made some equally tortured reasoning to compare what DMG was doing vis-a-vie track sanctioning to what WSBK and MotoGP have done. It's twisted but you can read it for yourself at Superbike Planet or Cycle News.
The stuff is starting to hit the fan so stay tuned!
