R1 Mirrors

I did not think they fit right (cocky angle compared to OEM) and the rubber boots did not fit right. So I grafted the R1 mirrors/stalks to the VTR fairing mounts with Don Herve's extenders in between, and life was good.

My winter project is looking like the VFR800 swingarm possibly 05 R1 sub frame and tail. Undertail exhaust. Possibly gonna be stretching swingarm 6 inches and and integrating a 300 back tire havent decided yet. A guy I know fabricates choppers and said he should be able to do that work for me in feb. Have decided though all I know is I am definately doing the swingarm conversion

Sko, those look good! Not sure why mine were different cuz previous owner put them on and told me they bolted right up...I agree that the angle isn't the best and the boots aren't perfect, but I've been told they look and function better than OEM and that's gooddernuff for me

GregW, I PM'd you with information on the solution to your 1000RR brake issue.

My projects:

VTR
Finish the 1000RR front end swap - install modded axle spacers and find some clip-ons that work (Duc 900SS Helis)
Weld a 900RR swingarm brace to the extra VTR swingarm. Clean up welds and powdercoat black. Install it and hope that the shock, exhaust, and hugger still work.
New front tire.

XS750
Fit up VTR front forks.
Strip bike to frame, sandblast everything, paint everything, and rebuild into a cafe racer. Big project. Long winter.

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the PM, it’s been a busy weekend for me. I installed the 1000RR forks into the 954 triples today and got them squared up. I was able to mill off .033” from each axle spacer. I ran out of time so I wasn’t able to see how it fit with the wheel.

There was one thing strange that I noticed. With the forks parallel and the axle head flush with the outside of the fork, the axle bolt side is inset .160” from the outside edge of the fork. I have made a spacer to fill that in, just wanted to make sure I am not doing something wrong here.

Thanks for the tip on the caliper spacers, no one in town stocks them, so I’ll order them along with some other parts maybe this evening.

I'm not sure but the set-back of the axle bolt may be correct and no spacer required.

I went to the garage and snapped this. It just looks strange to me. Seems like the axle should be flush with the fork's outer edge.

Not in any particular order or rush (it'll be 4 months before the bike's back on the road):

*CCT's
*fabricate exhaust hangers
*repair small cracks around the fairing mounts
*make a quick-change streetfighter mod with my extra headlight frame, bar-end mirrors and '85 Gixxer headlights.

Check out the VTR set up, it is similar; although that looks more than .160".

The VTR oem set-back is about .1" but I'll have to check when I install my fork brace. I'm sure they want to be sure there is enough compression on the spacers with only about 30# torque on the bolt

Hi Skokie,
Nothing wrong with your eyes, the axle is not really lined up in the shot since I removed the spacers to work on them. Thanks for letting me know about the stock setback. I haven’t had the Hawk very long and have only messed with the carb needles and exhaust so far. Looks like the CBR axle bolt gets a little more ummph with 58’lbs.

One project down: 2 Bros High Mount chop to 2/3 original length...just need to mount them up.
Next project: Begin fundraiser for new tires. Anybody interested in Kerker Carbon exhaust...only 2 months old?

Greg,

I don't know the design clearance of the 1000RR forks. Since the bikes are put up and packed closely together in the shed it's not easily accomplished either. This is my take on it:

There should be some small amount that the forks will have to come in. It's designed into the bike, most likely for ease of wheel installation. BUT, the more the forks bend in, the more friction you'll have on bushings and seals (mainly bushings) and that leads to increased stiction which ultimately results in suspension action that is not as good as it could be. That is why I am still using stock width spacers. Granted 2mm isn't a lot but it's 2mm less that the forks have to bend.

Thanks, I’ll take a look at that when I can bolt it together, Saturday or Sunday seems to be the earliest. I’ll check the center line and see if I bowed anything. Basically, I milled off the bevel on each spacer.

Talking

I'm putting an '02 RC51 in my garage!!!

My good friend Dean, who was just behind me when I crashed is selling me his PERFECT SP2.

I built an engine for it 3 years ago, with JE pistons and lots of head work.
It has an Ohlins shock, revalved forks, lots of cool bits. Also cmes with leathers, helmet and gloves.

Step 1 in my new track bike. My body floods with relief at the thought...

Smile this winter..

Above all, finding employment, as its been 14 long months and no pay. For some reason, I have purchased 3 motorcycles during that time, almost as many as I purchased while employed! Plus 2 cars too... hmm too much time to surf the Net?

I have to GET my 00 Superhawk, which I just left a deposit on. Then I am selling my '83 CX650e, the not-sold-in-the-USA version that is similar to a CX650 Turbo in looks, but not as fast. At least I have 3 interested parties, so that keeps the wife off my back.

Then on to check out the SH, change all fluids, tune up, new front tire, etc etc, plus finish my CX500 "adventure bike" with KLR front end as well as my second CX500 "restoration". And somewhere in there, I have to pull and rebuild the carbs in my '76 Goldwing so I can sell it in the Spring. Or Summer...

At times I wish winter was longer, as I'd get more of this stuff done!

Jim ("just so NO to projects!")

streetfighter, already have the LSL bar kit and vapor dash done. Just need to fab up something cool to cover the radiators and clean up the wiring. Unfortunately they decided to store all that wiring up front. I think I'll pull it all back under the airbox

Winter is OVER! Lets see 'em!

Original goal- chop 2 Bros pipes
After unexpected collision on a beautiful 75 degree January day-
Paint job
Grips
Bar ends
Rim stripes
Daytona steering stabilizer
Lower fairing (tomorrows project)
Silverstar headlight (cause I dropped the other one trying to put the fairings on)
LED taillight
Camera mount on tank

So here it is, still working on the other tail section which is going to be black. The new lower is truck bed liner.
