Winter projects " what's every one doing

So as I am sitting here I was thinking what all have I done to the Hawk lets see some of this might not be spelled right.
  • Ohlins rear shock – I think it was a 10mm spacer also.
  • Front fork work – valve work, springs, lowered some.
  • Front brakes - stainless lines, gshr 6 pods & master, Braking pads, Ebc contour rotors.
  • Jardine high mount slip-ons
  • Moriwaki’s rear sets
  • Taper bearings in steering head.
  • Factory pro – 4 deg advance, shift kit “spring, star wheel, detent lever, bearing”.
  • Tps mod
  • gshr voltage R/R
  • Stainless clutch line.
  • 520 chain conversion 4 sprockets to choose from 2 stock, 1 lower for front & 2 bigger for back.
  • K&N air filter with Dynojet kit.
  • Ap manual cct’s
  • Par removed
  • Mototeck under tail.
  • Rear huger.
  • Frame sliders.
  • full lower
Things I have to install yet
  • Front fork brace.
  • Moriwaki’s stage 1 valves.
Some things I want yet
  • Pistons to go with cams, have “different motor I can build”
  • Reinforced engine covers.
  • Honda’s jet kit & head work.
  • Steering dampener.
  • quick release for front body work
Now I wonder what all I should do this winter to keep me busy. Don’t want to spend a hole lot more cash on this the engine work will cost around 2k with part’s and me doing most of it. But I can sell old engine if I want works fine.

So this is what it comes down to what’s left to do to her and is it worth it is there any low cost mods left.

Winter projects and what are you going to do to your hawk's

keep it on 2 wheels

well i probably not going to do anything to the hawk over the winter but i might pick up a 1982 kawasaki KZ1000 and fix it up and do some custom paint n stuff for a nice cheap "cruiser". its 400 bucks and the guy was ratting it so he rusted the exhaust and stuff so i might try and be a little different with the exhaust setup.

I'll put "Winter" in quotes, as there's no way I'll finish it probably anytime soon... more of a "WinterS" type of affair... but I'm buying a second 'Hawk (hope to have it this weekend) to make it "something special"... Here's the plan and parts list....

RC front end (already have it, in a bunch of pieces, but its are all there)...

Attack adjustable triple clamps (there are real sweet.. came with forks I bought!!)

VFR swingarm conversion... (got all the pieces but the sprocket and brake line)

Wheels... rear is VFR 5 spoke (5th gen) and I'm going to find eventually a SP2 RC front 5 spoker to match.)

Rear subframe and tail will be removed and a custom "GSXR 750" styled subframe and tail will be grafted on... (Have a GSXR sub and tail to use a starting point)

Undertail exhaust... since I have to make a bunch of adjustments to the exhaust for the VFR swingarm, thinking of going all the way and maybe using a CBR1000 style can up underneath... so a 2 into 1 big can up underneath to show off the swinger....

Fairings... may be adjusted depending on how I feel after doing all the above!!! I've been playing with fibergalss parts lately, and looking to intergrate a bit of "sharpness" to the Hawk panels.

*** New wife.... as she'll probably divorce me if she actually was able to see my Paypal account transactions over the last 4 months of part collecting. (ARRGGHH!!)

The only thing I want to do this winter is take the pipes down to High-Performance Coatings (HPC) and have the pipes cermaic coated. I'm considering having them done tip to tail in black ceramic.

Down here on the gulf of Mexico, I do summer projects instead and ride most of the winter'; just can't go too far north tho'! So I built my RCBVFR750 this summer. I do have some things on the plate for it, mostly minor, but new/different triple tree and tapered bearings are on the list.

I don't know how many people have done the undertail thing, but I know that mine was a challenge. The SSS will make it easier, but there is ALOT of repositioning (electronics) to get it done, as well as creating your own undertail. I haven't finalized the complete design and I have ridden it for a season. Sometimes I wish that I wouldn't have done it.

I know what you mean.... after the mods I did last winter/spring on my current Hawk (RC front end, custom undertail, high mount exhaust, and assorted odds and ends) I was determined if I did more mods, it would only happen on a second bike, as spending the whole riding season finishing off my bike killed me.

Woudl love to see some pics of your work... even in progress...

Oh yeah, I made my own cans and wen't el cheapo in construction the first time. This next time (this winter) I am making carbon cans. I am going to have a student cnc some ends and rivet the carbon in place. Should actually make it quieter, as I am downsizing the outlets (found that two 2" outlets has too much flow for the carbs to react properly (even with the one (2-1-2) section being 2.125"inside diameter.

It was 85 degrees in Temecula CA yesterday so if and when the rainy season starts in January or February I might do some things, then again it'll still be in the 60's so maybe not. I do not miss winter!

CBR1000 forks going on. I’ve got two issues at the moment. 1) Need to figure out how much to mill off the axle spacers. B) I have ’04 forks, but an ’06 wheel. The rotors are bigger for ’06 it seems, so the calipers hit the rotor before I can get them bolted up. Cheap fix would be spacers between the calipers and the forks. Probably much safer to just buy the ’04 rotors. It’s only money, right?

Better Master Cylinder on the VTR and different Graphics. I am tired of the Silver and Black.

My real winter project will be Converting my old 82 CBF to better suspension and wheels to allow 17" radials to be installed.

And a Slipper clutch in my part time SuperMoto

cbx: needs cleaning, steering head bearings and rebuilding the rear shock

But the winter project I'll spend most of my time on: bringing a 1983 CB1100F back to life I found on ebay. all original but slightly neglected. Needs all brakes and most bearings overhauled, fork springs/fluid. new chain. Found some flatside carbs and pipe with pod filters for it ready to go on. If compression isn't good I'll put a wiseco big bore kit in it, but hoping I don't need to. Need to find replacement shocks for that era that are good quality/adjustable.

my superhawk is perfect now!! needs waxing.

have heat in the garage, should be fun.

Actually, my FIRST winter project is nearly taken care of - cleaning the garage! I have a few more things to be disposed of and a few more car parts to sell then I can move all of my two wheelers in. So .....

VTR;

- replace fluids, ALL of them
- give the bike a good "going over"
- check my fork internals to see what's in there
- have Pyramid lower and PowerBronze hugger painted, then install them
- decide if I really wanna do the VFR sssa conversion or not
- ^ if yes, then get the wheel, install, and make new exhaust
- decide if I wanna keep this Wilbers shock or not
- ^ if yes, then install it
- replace left inner fairing (holds the turn signal)
- install SpeedoHealer
- install timing advancer
- install one of my jet kits (might just wait untill spring for that)
- swap sprockets (might just wait for spring with this one, too)
- sell the undertail I wasted time buying
- ^ re-locate electronics to make more room under seat (do write-up?)
- do SOMETHING about these crappy stock mirrors (WAY too short)

And teach this f'n thing who's boss when a wrench is in hand!

CBR;

- complete teardown
- convert to street fighter (that should indicate "too long to list")

Mountain bike;

- ride it. What?!?!? It's only snow.

Road bike;

- throw a cover over it. Maybe i'll actually ride it more than twice next year. LOL!

To be honest, i'll have more "to do" with "supporting items", like the aforementioned garage cleaning, and then there's space heaters and possibly welding equipment purchases. Even then, these items may require the garage electrical being upgraded. THAT would really screw things up, so gotta see about that, too. Crap, forgot about that.

I know, I saw some from works - but OMG, it was more than I paid for the whole bike! I'm hoping there is something in between. Was even thinking some of the newer naked bikes might have similar length dual shocks that might work.

For the cbx, its a prolink, I found a reference for how to replace the oil and seals and restor it so I'm going that route. Its too big and heavy to try to pretend like I'm going to make it handle much better - plus, the aftermarket ones on that bike are almost impossible to adjust preload on.

Mods I always tell people to do is Suspension

I did Ohlins rear & Racetech springs/valves in spring of '06 - The best mod I ever did.

'02 VTR Mods:
Erion pipes
Zero Gravity taller w/s
Givi Top Case (I use to ride old Beemers)
K&N & Jet kit
AP manual CCT
LP flush mount signals
Hot Grips (Nice)
Suspension
DID chain & AP sprockets (I think AP) - stock settings
Galfer SS fronts only
Frame sliders
Gel pad inserts into seat

Will do before next summer

Front brake upgrade

Still have stock battery - what should I replace with?

Here's what I'm planning, weather or not I succeed is another topic all together:

* GSXR750 forks with CBR954 triples, VTR wheel with Ø320mm rotors
* CBR954 swingarm with VTR wheel
* Frame to swingarm pivot connectors
* Custom modified WP rear shock from an R6

The swingarm project might be first because I still need some clip-ons and rotors for the fork project.

I perused everyones posts and am impressed my everyones industrial endeavors.

After so many years and bikes modded the enthusiasm has waned for me, maybe its the high gas prices again and winter knocking at the door. If can finish the Tommasellis with longer throttle cable & clutch line and maybe increase the wire size of my auxiliary headlight relay powered harness, then get the fork brace & tube guards done, I'll be happy.

My wife's honeydo list will entail an extreme test of my craftsmanship. I'm an ex-aeronautical /space engineer who has been fixing (arch/engrg) big buildings for 26 years and airplaines & motorcycles over the last 30 years have kept me in touch with my roots because they are relatively small and made from neat materials and demand tight tolerances. I consequently dread working on the house doing bathrooms, window casings, baseboards, trim, painting and such.

There is always spring to dream about as I pedal through the biting wind to stay on 2 wheels.

winter projects

For the shawk I will:

Replace chain and sprockets
Change all fluids
possibly add ss lines
possibly more if I have time

Around the house:
downstairs bathroom - paint and new fixtures around
downstairs bedroom, paint, new drop celing, new outlets covers
the kitchen - paint, new cabnets, new countertop, new fixtures, new floor, new light fixtures

I will spent the majority of this winter working on / in the kitchen. Got to love owning a house.

It's in the garage hanging from the overhead floor joists right now.

Just replaced a leaky fork seal so no need to replace fork oil over the winter.
New tires to go on. (Dunlop Qualifiers being replaced with same).
Will flush new fluids through brakes and clutch.

Maybe new steering head bearings. (currently a little "bump" when centered)

I wonder about clutch plates. I have no idea how many total miles are on current clutch hardware. I might just do it to be on the safe side.

For once in my life, I will KEEP THE STINKIN' BATTERY CHARGED! What good is a trickle charger if you never hook it up !?

Stumpy, nice list of mods...we don't really have Winter here in FL, so it's prime riding season right now but that's why I have a dilemma. I'm a shade tree mechanic and I'm thinking of doing the 16K maintanence myself to save the $65/hr labor to have the valve clearance checked and also to have confidence and satisfaction that it was done right especially if new shims are needed, but that puts me outta commission for a week or more only working on the bike at night after work and weekends with all the normal honey do list items. What would you do bro?

Also, Slim - I'd recommend R1 mirrors cuz they bolt right up and work great
