Tires tell me which ones suck!

I know you guys have gone through multiple sets of tires here and all I want to know is which ones not to purchase!

Thinking about going with Michelin Pilot Power or the Metzler Sportec M5.

I have Pirelli Diablo on her now and there not a bad tire, just looking for a good all weather tire.

Leaning towards the Metzlers due to an encounter the wife and I had on our Goldwing when I hit a concrete block in the middle of the road blowing out the Metzler and bending the rim but I was able to come to a controlled stop and the Metzlers saved my ***.

I going to purchase a set this week so any input would be great!

Thanks SIRR1

I always get the ones that look good when you paint the little grooves in them some kind of bright color.

For me and my personal riding conditions and requirements, I am running a set of Dunlop Q2's, and I'm loving them. But my experience is limited.

The Dunlop's replaced a set of Powers, and if give the choice on a new set I would take the Q2's.

+1 on painting the grooves. I prefer conti road attack 2. run them on three different bikes.

Well, you asked which one's DO suck, so I'll just say that all stock D204's and probably any tire older than about 5 years meet that criteria.

I'm also hoping 7Moore7 forgot the smiley following his first sentence.

I would not buy Pirelli Angels. I liked them for traction in all conditions but tire life on the rear was poor.

You didn't tell us what kind of riding you do - Sport touring? track days? Everything in between?
I do a lot of commuting (85miles/day) but only ride on the sunny days. My commute is on wonderfully curvy secondaries - I have chicken strips but only 1/4" For this I find Michelin Pilot Road 2 on back with Pilot Powers on the front work best for me

I just put a pair of Michelin PP3 (Pilot Power) brand new this year, heard good things so thought I would try them (fell down the stairs and havn't put 1 mile on them yet, but there on the bike)
The other tire that gets high marks on the forum is the Dunlop Q2's

Metzler used to be a great tire back when they were under the same roof as Pirelli but they have been living on a much smaller R&D budget since they broke off 5 years ago or so.

To sum up.
If your into road with the odd track day PP3 or Q2.
Over all (not here) heard good things about the Michelin Road's if you like to tour more then lean

Dude, I found glitter paint for my tire grooves. I put that on my 2cts, excellent tire for me, but also my first set of semi-sticky tires. 2mm chicken strips.

Looking for new street tires as well to replace my Pirelli Diablo II. They provided crazy grip but are done after 3K miles. Anyone has a suggestion for something with equivalent grip but better life? Battlax BT-016?

The BT-016's or better yet BT-20's (newer version of 16's) are very good tires and can be found at @ $200/set if you shop around. CycleGear has had them at this price off and on for at east the last year!

< you mean this smiley? Q2's let me fit ALL the colors in, the Powers didn't leave enough space for the purple paint

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm late to my quiche and scones brunch.

Thanks everyone for responding!

All weather running the twisties in south central mizzery ozarks country.

I guess one would call it sport touring, no racing or track days just all weather riding on all types of roads and highways.

Thinking about the Michelins PP3 not Metzlers in my opening thread, but the metzlers did save my *** when I hit that concrete block a few years back on the wing...

What about Continentals? There all over ebay at a much lower price than the Lops or Michelins, just wonder if anyone has tried them.

Thanks! SIRR1

I used to use the q2's and they are great stick to the road great, but ...as they only lasted 2k @ $200 a pop I decided nope and have been running the shenko's last 2 changes..these lasted me 4 times longer at cheeper price. The downside is though I don't trust them on wet roads a whole lot so always a compromise.

Contrary to popular belief, Michelin tires are not a very good choice for the street. I'd go with a set of Q2's and you won't be disappointed. There are others that work good too but the Dunlops will take care of you.

I have been running Bridgestone Battlax BT-023 Sport Touring tires. About 6K since installed, and they still look to have plenty of life left in them. Bike is used for commuting/touring only (no track days) but the BT-023 works for me with decent feel and wet/dry grip. I have used Michelin and Bridgestone on my other bikes over the years, and both have served me well. I may give Michelin a try for the next go around.

I found a deal and ended up buying Battlax S20. It's too early to judge but I have a good felling about these tires. The grip is impressive, thread life will probably suck.

You should have gone with the BT023, the tread life is awesome. I squeezed out 13000 on my last rear, hard to believe but granted i rode it down to the wires.
Grip is decent, wouldn't ride them on a track day tho. I commute 140 miles a day, 5 days a week and i just bought my new pair yesterday. i bought my last on november 3, 2012. a week off for xmas and a week off for memorial day. Do the math if you want

I'm on the the Michelin Power 3's, my old SV had the power pures.. there awsome! really sticky tires, pures are said to be short lived (wear fast) the power 3's are said to give the same traction as the pures and long life of a 2ct.. $300 installed! my tire guy was pushing them over the Q2's.. he said he would sell me the Q2's $280 installed.. but he thought I would be happier with the new power 3's (ps.. don't mistake power 3 for road 3)

Since the road 3s have been brought up. What is your opinion on them? I have one on the back and haven't noticed anything bad... Yet again I don't push them too hard haha. I've got a angel on the front and that feels planted too, only down is as said before wears faster.

I went with the S20 because, besides the good price, it fits better my riding style. I don't commute much and usually ride canyon roads with sporadic track visits. I always preferred sacrificing durability and go for maximum grip. Check out the comparison between the S20 and BT-016 on Bridgestone's website: BATTLAX HYPERSPORT S20 | Products | Motorcycle Tires | Bridgestone Corporation

Almost like an oil thread, but better. So I'm in.
Put a set of PP2ct on right after getting the bike. I'm at about 4500mi. and the rear is done. squared off, no tread in the center.Front has at least another 4500mi in it. I think I would have seen a little better mileage if I had run higher pressures in the rear. I think in the quest to get a 10% rise in pressure, cold to hot, the road conditions and my riding style should have dictated a higher cold pressure. That riding style has changed a bit as I have gained skill and confidence. I'm to the point of no chicken strips.
The tires have been good overall, but with some issues around feel and the way the tires behave on road surface irregularities. There is a (lot?) of squirming around and I'm not to thrilled with it. Better with higher pressures, but still there. I'm assuming that there will always be some, no matter which tires are used , but I would like something with a bit less wiggle. This probably goes without saying, but the best I've had is the best I know.
So... do I replace just the rear with say a PP3, or for a bit better center life, a PR3, or just opt for a set of Q3 or S20?
If I only got the same mileage on the rear as I did with the current set I would be ok with that, though I would like a bit more. What I really want is a well planted, good feed back (less squirm) tire experience.
