My $20 brakes

Okay, sometimes the wife will agree to a purchase if the deal is really good.
I did paint them because they were pretty scuffed up.

Hi BIRDOPREY,

The calipers look great! I just got a set last month off ebay, and my first thought after taking a look at them mounted was that they would look great painted black. My only problem is I am paint challenged, and do no have a clue about how involved this would be to undertake. How hard is this job to tackle and get it right? How did you prep them for paint and what kind of paint did you use....etc.... Anything you could share would be appreciated!

Thanks

First let me say that I can be sort of lazy. Some of the members here at the forum have found that even high heat paint won't last on brake calipers so I did a pretty much half-assed job on my painting. Just waiting to see how it holds up. Dupli-Color has a new high heat paint with ceramic which they rate to 1200 degrees F, intermittantly. They say this paint is good for exhaust components so...we'll see.
I cleaned the calipers with spray brake cleaner, sanded lighty, then painted in many light coats allowing to dry between coats. I haven't ridden enough yet to have any trouble with the paint but I'll let you know what happens.
Oh, yeah, to prevent contamination I painted them with the pads in, pistons retracted and brake line on but masked off. Before you say anything, Kicken, I supported the calipers and blocked the overspray with cardboard.

Thanks, I think it sounds like it would be worth giving a shot. I will probabaly not have a chance to get to it until the end of April, so if you have any feedback on how the paint job is holding up by then, that would be great.

truthfully, the left caliper only has cheap flat black spray paint on it. the right has the good paint. I'll let ya'll know how they hold up.

Don't they make paint specifically for calipers? Ahh, yes they do....

Yea I had used this one on the SHawk's headers. I thought I had prepped it rather well and then applied many coats over the course of a few days. Couldnt ever cure it in an oven though, due to its size, but they looked real nice just sitting in the corner of my garage. First time I had the bike back together, stuff starts smoking off, not only that, its melting and flaking at the same time! The semi melted flakes float around in the mind and catch onto whatever they can! Turned some of the chrome I had on my Bandit into speckled black and chrome.

Some parts of it look like they held up ok, but the majority, not so much...

I don't know who makes it, but I have seen two part caliper paint kits in a variety of colors at my local auto parts store. These are more trouble to apply, but I suspect they would be much more durable than VH1 or other spray can caliper paint.

I think the biggest issue with paint is what will the brake fluid do to it during normal maintenance. The two part product might hold up better but - no doubt about it - they look good right now!

I think if I ever had to rebuild a set of calipers I would have them annodized. Better have your color scheme worked out by then tho
