Just called M4 exhausts

Based on comments made by Shayne, our neighborhood Australian affiliate, about the excellent full exhaust system made by M4 for the VTR, I picked up the phone and called the company to see if they still had any kicking around. I was told that they did not (discontinued as the VTR was not a very good seller in the poser and squid saturated North American market). I then asked if they would be open to making a batch of them if I could find say ten buyers and was told no. Oh well, I tried. If anyone knows someone with an M4 system they want to part with let me know....

If 10 sets isn't enough, I wonder how many it would take. If I had to venture a guess I'd say somewhere around 100, but it would be interesting to know their answer.

good try Mikstr.

hell, you'd think if they already did all the hard stuff, that running off a few copies would be no big deal. i guess they don't need the business or it's more trouble than we think.

Yeah, it really is a lot of trouble. When you are cranking out systems one after another of the same thing and have to stop, change your setup, get different parts, etc, etc it's a pain. Plus the chances of getting something wrong is really high, even when changing back to your big sellers. You don't want to hurt your cash cow just to sell a couple of systems.

That said, I'll bet they batch their production anyway based on an economical quantity. If you could figure out where that point is then maybe you'd have a chance at getting them to make some for you.

Plus the fact that the systems that they would be building for the VTR are already sold units versus sticking them in the warehouse.

Galaxieman is an unknown quantity at this point
Might it not be an option to just get some cans from them w/o midpipes and have a local shop fab some up for you?

The sweet part of the system (according to Shayne,I have never seen one) is the header itself. They make extensive use of balancing pipes to boost torque, a rather complex but very effective design. If I remember correctly, he mentioned a chap in Australia has one on an othewise stock engine and it pumps out 112 hp! Imagine what that set-up would do with cams,....

Yep, as Mikstr says I have never seen another system like it. Pity I don't have pictures of it. I had all the specs recorded for it a couple of years ago (I was going to get one custom made), but ended up finding a Moriwaki full system instead which was going to be waaay cheaper than a custom one.

It used multiple diameter tube for the headers, 3 balance pipes, and was a work of art. Close clearances in fitting due to its complex design. It looked like a snake coiled up underneath the shock!!!

Shayne, any idea how it performs across the rev range? (ie. is it torquey across the board or mostly top-end biased? I would to tend to think teh former given all the trouble to add crossovers and the like)

cheers

Not sure. But as you say the dyno figures for peak horsepower were good for a bike with stock internals. So it certainly works well in the upper rev range.

I am inclined to agree with you though, given the varying pipe diameters used. If you were building a race system you would have larger pipe for the primary section I think.

From memory, I reckon they went to a lot of effort to make a pipe for the rear cylinder of similar length to the front, that is why there is so much pipe work near the shock.

There's a set of M4 cans on ebay.co.uk at the moment (and for only £132.99, naff all for anyone outside the UK, bloody weak pound, grr)

However, as you say, its the headers people want

All the best, Joe
