How much should I shim my needles?

Friday night I'm headed out to the drag strip and for the first time will be timed. I want to be bring my A game so along with uncapping my exhaust I'm going to remove the air cleaner. The bike will be trailered to the track and carefully watched as so no dust gets in.

I'm running stock jets and don't have time to order a kit. I plan to shim the needles to give me the extra fuel I'll need. How much should I shim the needles? Someone mentioned washers can be purchased at Radio Shack to shim the needles. What do I ask for, and how do I know what thickness they are?

I have a feeling your valuable input is gonna start with "I wouldn't tell you to do this, but if you reeeally want to then..."

use any washers that fit the needle tightly. I shimmed my needles .020 and it works awesome with my setup.

Usually removal of an aircleaner can only help unless the airbox is removed with it. I'm leaving the entire box intact. The only performance problem I can see is the lean condition. Besides I'm not pulling a K&N, its a dirty stocker.

resonance will change. plus shimming wouldn't compensate enugh. you'd need diff jets

The resonance may change but we're talking about a sound wave which has more to do with airbox volume rather than internal air restriction. The deal is I race tomorrow and I need the bike to be its best and I can't get jets on such short notice. I'm only going to put like 5 miles on the bike before setting it back to stock. If I can get 5 more hp but have to run it lean I don't mind.

I'm not trying to be argumentative. I appricate all the input.

I wish I had a couple weeks in which case I would do it right with a dynojet kit running 190/185 and a K&N filter.

I understand what you're doing but I don't see you gaining 5hp at all. maybe a 1hp gain at most

Hm.. I thought you were gonna take the top off the airbox. Well, that's not so bad after all. Not that I'd condone it or anything...
