DUH to me.

For most people this would be a very expensive option as paying for a machine shop to make a steering stem would be mulitples of the parts cost. If you can get it done for free then you have a big advantage for sure!

Going to find out right now.

Edit:
He says he can make it this winter. Which may be soon or later. Not a big deal if it gets done.

So the new list is:
GSXR wheel
GSXR axle
GSXR fender
Clip-ons (maybe depending on necessary height adj.)

Ok, so I'm full of DUH! moments.

Turns out that the GSX-R stem is the same lenght.

Alex at All ***** Racing (www.goallballs.com) hooked me up with the proper bearings. The lower is stock SH, the upper is machined.

$56 and change shipped.

So far, this looks like a fair straight swap. Clip-ons and fairings will be the next obstacles to conquer before riding season.

I am surprised.. the 03 GSXR1k stem I had was quite a bit longer than the SH IIRC.

Lazn, I made sure this wasn't a duh moment, asked two of the buddies who are machinists what they saw for a measurement.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

If you wouldn't mind, ask him what grade material he'd make the new stem from.

He said he probably would have used T6 Aircraft grade aluminum. Probably would have left it a solid center instead of hollowing it out.

I'm pretty sure they are 330mm, but yeah, the bolt pattern is the same...

Hi all, Im in the process of doing a 05 Gsxr1000 conversion to my 07 storm...im planning on using a gixer triple with a storm stem, std front wheel with a gixer axle and only having to make 2x 1mm spacers to centre the rotors. Build link below on signature and a few pics to show you where she is up too

and how she stands at the moment

Tweety, what is this in response to?

VTRFighter, sounds a little familiar. Good looking bike. Mine is going to be all Suzuki in the front, makes it easier.

04 GSXR 600 triples, forks and wheel

I have a GSXR steering stem and Firestorm steering stem in hand. They measure nearly identical from the top of the lower triple to the top of the upper bearing surface. The only difference was a machined bearing for the upper. The lower is still stock VTR. I sourced the bearing through AllBallsRacing (www.goallballs.com). Alex is the salespersons name, very helpful.

Nice looking bike.. Raising the back subframe like that looks odd to me, but still: good work!

If you keep the VTR wheel, you will also need new bearings for the wheel and will need to grind out the center of the wheel some (20mm vs 25mm axle) and custom spacers both for inside the wheel between the bearings and to center it on the axle in addition to the rotor spacing.

I was going through the process of this, when I ran across a deal on a 954 front end I couldn't pass up and instead did that.

That's part of the reason I'm sticking with the GSXR triples and using a GSXR wheel, not as much modifying of parts needed.

I'm anxious. I'm hoping everything works out ok, and goes as smooth as I hope (I'm doubting that though, it never works that way)

Are the GSXR1000 stem longer than the GSXR 600, if the 600 fits, I guess that the 1000 will be too long ??
Have just seen an ad for both forks, stem, damper and axle for 200 $ so got to ask

I looked up the part numbers on Bikebandit.com I got different part numbers.

Looking at the SWATT Motorcycle site, it appears that they use the same size fork tubes. So you could buy it all for $200 then find a 600 set of triples. Just a thought.

Great minds think alike I was on bike bandit checking part numbers
I may buy a whole front end, in the end it should run cheaper.
Can't wait to see yours done to see how it fits.

Ok, so it has taken a bit more work (as mentioned) than first thought..
The stem had to be pressed out of the gixer triples and machined down to match the stock storm stem (say that fast three times lol ) once this was done it all fell into place almost too easy....by machining the stem ive retained all the std bearings/washers/seals and spacers which also made life easier...all to do now is buy a Gixer front wheel..fender...callipers...and the list goes on

VTRFighter, don't know how I missed this last post. Looks good. Very clean.

I've recently started mine. Got the fairings off, taking some measurements.

The forks are long enough. I was relieved. Clipons will be too low if under the upper triple tree. So I am going the Superbike bar route. 1 1/8 Handlebar from Pro Taper with the shortest clamps I can find.

Hoping to have the whole project done in the next 2.5 weeks or so.

VTRfighter,
Since the stem is a friction fit only, what was the machine tolerance between the two parts?

VTRfighter, where did you source that radiator? Does it keep things cool? Looks small.

not sure mate, i pressed the Gixer one out and cut the Storm one out and took them both to the local machine shop. they machined the upper half of the Gixer stem and re threaded it to resemble the Storm one...this way when i bought new head stem bearings i only had to buy a set for the storm...

i got it off eBay from Delkevic. It is a DRP (direct replacement part) to suit a SV650 99-02
I took it to a mate who works at a radiator place and had him relocate the right outlet and it was a sweet fit..until i put the gixer forks on...the lower triple/yoke hits it now...so, its back off till i get a fender and have all the new clearance measurements to re fit it...

as for cooling....ill get back to ya on that one...lol

some progress pics....

and some stuff i just sent to powdercoating...
