I have asked twice now, and both times the service tech (or perhaps outsourced customer service rep?) Sudco has responded that they have never supplied or had available the a replacement needle jet for the 48mm CV semi downdraft carbs used on the SH.
Technically it is a non serviceable part... though I know it can be replaced as I had them so by a friend that made some... I always assumed he removed a needle jet and backward engineered his solid metal works program to make them.. But if you say they are (were) available perhaps they still are. Even if its just new old stock.

so, carbs came in a few days ago...... had a look at the HDJ needle jets and can't see the small holes, though I am wondering if they are perhaps on the underside... also, they have installed the 1.7 jet kit, which means that the main air jets have been removed and replaced (holes are 1.4mm on front and 1.1 mm on rear, both of which seem larger than the stock hole from what I can see). Anyhow, as I am trying to learn how everything works, not to mention I want to reduce the number of times I have to pull the carbs apart next spring as I venture to get the jetting spot-on, I sent an e-mail to Marc at FP asking him about the following:
- all else being equal, does the switch to the HDJ needle jet require richer or leaner settings, and by how much (clip positions and MJ sizes)?
- as I am running a set of identical length HPower (long) stacks on my bike (instead of the staggered OEM stacks), will the new MAJ set-up work for me or will additional changes be needed? Also asked him to explain why the stagger on the hole sizes.
Hoping to get an answer.....

Should be about the same jet sizes - It's supposed to deliver the same fuel, just in a better state.

Should work the same as before - I've done testing w long and short stacks and the MAJ remained the same."

So, after having issues caused by a loose fit of the HDJs, I sent them back to Factory Pro to get them fixed. Apparently the O-rings used during the initial install weren't applying enough tension, allowing the needle jets to move around. Anyhow, I finally got word today that they are supposedly fixed and should be on their way home soon (just in time to be installed onto my refurbished engine). While the turnover time was longer than I would have hoped (mind you, my bike was out of commission anyhow), Marc at FP has stood behind his product and agreed to cover the postage fees (there and back) and warranty work, so kudos to them. It should be said too, that he noted having to wait for new O-rings to arrive, adding to the turnover time.
Will keep everyone posted with eventual results. I continue to remain hopeful as to the potential of these needle jets.....

Update: I e-mailed Factory Pro on the weekend for my monthly carb update and it seems they finally got the O-ring situation sorted. Marc informed me that the carbs would be dropped off in the mail tomorrow. No immediate mad rush to get them back as bike season is over here (winter, though truthfully you'd never know it from looking outside at the present time), but I wasn't sure if things would ever get sorted. Come on spring so I can get these babies mounted up and do some testing..... high hopes......

well, what choice did I have? I had too much money into this to just walk away. Anyhow, let's hope it all works out (I remain optimistic about the potential of these needle jets, as I have said before).
as for trying it early, there's a new law in place here and all vehicles riding on public roadways between Dec 15th and March 15 th (or is that April 15th... I forget) have to be fitted with winter tires... so nothing here until the spring......
Hopefully this whole eventful experiment will bear fruit...... will keep all informed.
Good thing is, if it does work out, the chaps at FP are now set up to perform the surgery on anyone else's carbs....

well, finally got my carbs back and tried a test fit with slide and needle assembly....... Problem! Seems the slide is hanging and won't go all the way down (hangs up about 1/8 of the way up, and also binds the needle, which results in it needing a fairly stiff pull to get it off its seat). I have a spare carb sitting around (bought it to do some butterfly valve experiments) and, upon close inspection, it seems that the central orifice in the HDJ needle jet is slightly too small, causing the needle to get hung up..... so, what now?
- will look at trying to remove the HDJs and getting them drilled out to OEM size, or
- replace them with stock needle jets.
I just wrote Marc at FP to enquire about the removal procedure....
Nothing simple about this so far.......

kind of obvious they did not check the hole diameters before doing the install (the difference in sizing is perceptible to the eye, however).... I didn't send them the slides but they have needles from their own kits if they wanted to test them...

got a reply from FP, seems I need to get it hand-reamed (0.1115", straight flute reamer; jet can be left in place as it's done) and should be set to go. A pain in the butt to be sure, but I may finally get this sorted. Considering all the trouble (and money) this project has been, I damn well hope it delivers the goods......

well, I had the ever-helpful Jack Flash look around at some of his machinist contacts and no one wants to tackle it for fear of messing it up (which I respect, as it's better than trying and screwing it up) so I will be looking at sending the carbs back to FP to have them do it.... and the saga continues....

The biggest issue is tolerance with an item like this. The vibrations alone can lead to oversizing, and you may end up with a larger than 0.1115'' hole. This alone can have a negative effect on carburation, rendering it difficult to fine tune, if not at all.
The fact that FP says you can work the diffuser without removing it is what is of concern here. If you drill into the diffuser at just a slight angle because you leave it inside the carb body to do the job, will have a negative outcome. Difficulty carbureting and excessive wear and tear on the needle and diffuser.
Smart move on Mikstr's part to send the carbs back to FP, and have them do the job. If it's not right, then he will have leverage to deal with them, and not have them say 'You should have sent them back, you didn't drill the hole right'

Update: carbs have been at FP for just shy of 2 months now. I have been trying to get an update for about one month now (4 e-mails).... all to no avail. Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!! Seems customer service is a lost art.....

I hope you're wrong too, because he's the same guy who made it sound like such a simple procedure (when he was telling me how to have it done) via e-mail; if it's withing the reach of a layman like myself, surely it's a walk in the park for specialists like themselves. The truth is they should have done their homework and checked the diameter of the hole (after all, they sell a variety of VTR jet kits) before sending it back to me in the first place (granted, being human, they are open to making mistakes too). Anyhow, I just want my carbs back...
