Chain / sprockets - recommendations & where to buy?
#2
I always thought JT made pretty good sprockets. I've used many of their aluminum ones on my motocross bikes. I put a steel JT on the hawk toward the end of last season. It is already near the end of its life. I think I'm gonna go back to sunstar the next time around. The stock sunstar lasted for a very long time. I would not recomend a JT, at least not on the SuperHawk.

AFAM or Supersprox are both good. JT are not bad.
So here's the question of the day: When you changed out your sprocket last fall did you also change the chain as well? If not, that's the problem. ALWAYS change chain and sprockets at the same time. Otherwise you will accelerate the wear on both.

The chain was not new, but very close to it. I rode on it for a month or two before deciding to add two teeth to the rear. If the used chain had anything to do with it I'd be surprised. Maybe I just got one out of a bad batch of sprockets.
Anyway, my opinion is that Takasago RK chains are the best.

Anyone else have any issues with sunstar rear sprockets? I am pretty sure mine may have an elliptical shape as the chain will go tight and loose as you spin the rear wheel. Seeing as the chain is still pretty new and I take good care of it I don't think its sticky links. Anyways it would only have to be out of round a little to cause this to happen. Just wondering if sunstar makes cheap sprockets that aren't toleranced as well.

sounds like normal stretch spots on the chain to me. your chain will get those as its broken in. I think most of us have that. there are always spots on the chain that are looser or tighter than other spots. just remember, when you go to adjust, use the tightest spot on the chain as a tension reference. you're chain can be a little too loose, but it can't be too tight.

thanks, so no worries. Good to know.
I have a DID chain sunstar sprocket combo I paid $130 for. Only thing is you could only get stock sized sprockets with the kit. The chain is great and the sprockets seem to be holding up very well against wear and tear.

DID X-ring or nothing.
I've used RK, Tsubaki, EK & Regina... nothing has come close to lasting like DID. My OEM DID chain lasted 50,000 miles. Put a new DID & sprockets on about 5,000 miles ago. Never had to adjust for stretch, even in the first 4,000 miles. It has only been adjusted when I put a new tire on.
