Brake Lines
#32
well, I finally got to try the brake swap with the gixxer 750 calipers I had, and you can officially add them to the list of direct bolt ons. I read somewhere about there being a significant difference between the hawks MC and the gixxer's MC as well, and since it came with the front end I bought, I really wanted to hook that up too. but there was a problem. the metal plate that holds up the resovoir was missing from my gixxer front end. also, the plastic tab that would have held the resovoir in place on that plate was broken on the gixxer resovoir. oh, and the plate mounts on the clip-on itself on the gixxer. not on the MC like the hawk, so there was no compatable hole for me to put a screw in and attach the plate on the gixxer MC. still with me? I used the hawk's plate, and cut the mounting tab on the gixxer resovoir to fit. then I mounted it straight onto the top screw that holds the lever assembly onto the clip-on. because of the new location, the hose connecting the resovoir to the MC actually goes back now instead of forward. so that was the worst part. aside from that little challenge, the rest went pretty smooth. calipers hooked right up, and although I will need to check again tomorrow, I don't think anything is leaking. now on to the results: I don't know if it was because of the gixxer MC, or whatever pads were on it, or whether tokico 4 pots are simply better than nissin 4 pots, but there IS a difference. I took it for a test ride and felt silly several times as I approached a stop light and started braking where I usually do, and then realized I was so early I had time to speed up again before the I really needed to brake. what a difference. it may not be as good an improvement as the gixxer 1000's 6 pots, but it sure is a step up from stock. now on to the pics,
I just got some shots after everything was hooked back up. sorry no before shots but you can see it on my personal pic.
this was what I did yesterday. Truck blew me away by loaning me a fork brace prototype until he gets a chance to make more.
this is the gixxer resovoir. you can see where I cut it to fit on the tab under it. and no it doesn't rub anything. I was surprised, my jury riggs don't usually work out this well.
number one in the hood, G!
let me know what you think.

Looks good. I know that some of the SV guys actually think those 4 pots are better than the 1000's 6 pots.. Plus you have more brake pad options now. So this may be the new best and easiest brake upgrade. (we need to get a few bikes together with several different setups and compare them all. lol)
Truck is a standup guy, just sucks that he is down with a bad knee. I know his inability to respond for a month or so ticked a few people off. But he is young and hopefully will be back and active here again soon!

Way to go Swordfish! Thanks for making the effort, and for posting the results. Much appreciated.
PS. I just realized you're the bikini bikewash guy, too. You are now officially my favorite Forum member! Expanding my horizons in so many ways...

wow thanks for the props. glad I'm broadening horizons for ya. I was a surpirsed that this whole thing worked as anybody. like I said before, my jury riggs don't usually turn out this good. as for the bikini girls, yeah its tough being out in the hot sun for hours staring at them scrubbing, and sudsing, and rubbing... polishing...anyway, its my cross to bear.
