97-07 YZF600R Rear Shock
Has anyone ever tried to fit one? I ask because Dry the YZF weighs in about 20lbs heavier than the VTR, but the Suspension IMO is FAR superior. Compression and Rebound adjustment in the shock, and since it is sprung for the same weight load it seems like it would be a good fit. I'm mildly curious about the forks as well since they have the Compression and Rebound adjustment as well.
I will measure everything when I have the parts on my person but I'm going to pick up a Race bike from a guy on my YZF forum Friday afternoon that has been a race bike since 97 and has never been titled (but comes with the MSO so I could get it titled, but I don't see much point) and it comes with almost another complete bike worth of spares. I believe there is a spare rear shock but I don't know about forks, just wondering if anyone has ever tried to fit that rear shock before.
Thinking about registering the bike and myself next year for WERA, I need to look up and see what classes I can run with it, was going to do 650 Vtwin racing but I am getting a lot more than I could otherwise afford with this bike, just couldn't pass the deal up

Yes definitely join WERA and race the YZF! We are trying hard to grow the vintage field, it's a much better $ per fun factor than newer bikes. With the YZF you could run V7MW, and bump up to V7HW, which are the classes I run with my FZR400/600. If you have any questions at all about WERA or racing send me a PM and I'll help in any way I can. I have tons of FZR/YZF parts too.
I have a YZF down the barn, and a VTR shock in the basement. I'll take the shock down and get a picture of it next to the YZF next time I go down.

Here are some pictures.
The top look close enough, you could make up spacers to bolt the top of the YZF shock into the VTR mount.
The bottom is different. You would have to modify something about the shock or the VTR linkage to make them bolt up.
The overall length looks very close. I wasn't able to measure them.

98VTrider, thanks.. looks like it could be a decent winter project anyway.
I wouldn't be "traveling" to any races your way, but Barber, Little Tally, and Road Atlanta are all about 2 hours from me, and its cheaper to pay a race entry than it is to run a track day and if I'm reading it right if I race on saturday and show up early enough I get some track time in anyway for practice and I have the ability to practice on friday as well. Three tracks local to me and only a handful of trackdays but seems like every month there is a WERA event going on at one of them. I know I won't be fast or likely very competitive but it just seems like it will fit my budget better and I will have more chance to have a day to actually get to the track... Plus $100 for the track school at a wera event to get my licence just seems like money well spent if I'm going to be at the track a bunch anyway, regardless if I race or not to know whats going on.
Edit: oh and 98 if you were closer I would offer to take that roller off your hands there's enough parts with what I'm getting to build a second bike if I source out a frame and some odd's and ends. 2 motors, 2 carb banks, 2 sets of wheels, 2 sets of race fairings most of the expensive stuff is already there

I come down to Road Atlanta for that race, so maybe I'll see you next year. Racing is definitely a good way to improve your skills and get faster.
Jack Flash - I'll try to get that measurement tomorrow.

If you can, find out what the spring weight on the YZF shock is. That is more important than the weight of the respective bikes. If that figure is way off then the valving will be equally off.
The YZF shock also looks a good deal shorter, make sure it's stroke length is adequate and before you start sinking money in to the project, have a look at Jamie Daugherty's F4 shock conversion. He'll send you a custom valved, properly sprung, length adjusted F4i shock for your VTR, ready to mount for $420 (last I checked).

The spring is only part of the equation. There is the primary leverage of the swinarm and then the linkage.
The SH has a really unusual shock so there has never been a very inexpensive alternative unfortunately. Jamie can also revalve/rebuild the stock shock.

Yep, you nailed it - that YZF shock is WAY WAY WAY off for the VTR. Sure, you can make anything "work", but honestly that is not really a very good shock to be starting with. Either an upgrade to the original VTR or the F4 conversion would net you better performance and would actually be less expensive.

FYI... did you know WERA headquarters are in Woodstock, south of you and north of Marietta?

Mailing address is in canton, either way its only 45 mins or so from me lol

Please refer to our site for pricing information. For special cases like yours just email and I will give you an accurate quote.

They may have always been in Canton, but I lived nearby in Woodstock, so I always think it's Woodstock.
