Who's painted the little belly pan fairing thing?
I know the paint code, but I don't know how to do automotive painting. I just got a quote for it, and they said $250, which sounds outrageous to me.

I just painted mine with a rattle can. Krylon Fusion paint for plastics. If you are going to paint it black or silver I would just go with Krylon. It's easy enough to re-do if it gets chipped.
If you want to color-match you can order the paint in a spray can. I think the company is Color-rite but not sure. They advertise in Cycle World and Motorcyclist magazines.
Another option would be to go to an auto parts chain store like Kragen/Chucks/Schuks/Autozone or other that carries Dupli-color and pick the nearest color. You'll probably be able to find something very close. You can spray it with clear coat and buff it out to be very nice.
A store that specializes in automotive paint in your area could give you some tips on prep and might be able to sell you a very good match in a spray can.
$250 sounds like a lot but when you consider the cost of auto quality paint, labor, prep work and business overhead, it's about right. SOmetimes shops bid high on work if they are not really interested in it.

Yes ,that is outrageous ! See if you can find one of these paint reconditioning companies that goes around to car dealers doing paint repairs on used cars . Most of them will be happy to paint it for $30 or less ! I got mine painted in trade for a case of beer . I will have to admit mine has been painted twice now because of the debris coming off the front tire will slowly sandblast it over time . But it still looks better than the stock gray .

Plasti-KoteCo., Inc. makes a near exact color & sheen match for the OEM "silver" "lower engine cowl". It is called "Ultra Vinyl Color 421 Silver Smoke Metalic", and should be available at many auto and bigbox stores.

we use the color-rite products at the shop i work at. just did a 04 VFR it was a perfect match its expensive stuff but you get what you pay for.... and automotive paint is just plain expensive no matter which way you cut it

Well, I want it to be painted Italian Red. I was just on Color Rite's site, and they have a Aersol can of it for $33 I believe. Then I could do the clear coat over it, and buff it. But, I am going to check with some friends to see if they know someone that can do it for cheaper. I also want to paint the front fender a gloss black to match my Jardine cans..

As it cops damage from road debris, I painted mine with something I could touch up or repaint at home. I suggest you use a quality spray can paint of some sort, so you can do the same thing.

I used Color Rite paint to paint my lower fairing and the belly pan. It is a perfect match. If you are going to use Color Rite you need to go all the way. Their paint is urethane based so that it flexes. So you will need to do primer, base coat, color coat and clear. They are all urethane based and made to go with each other. Looking at my lower next to the upper fairings you cannot tell a difference in color. I just replaced my right side fairing due to a kamikaze bird and the lower matches the new fairing better than the old one. I applied 3M protective film over the paint so it has been holding up very well. It is not cheap but you get what you pay for. Doing just the belly pan you can get away with one can of each easily and have paint left over.

not completely true, you can get aways without using a primer, the original paint from Honda on that piece is a urethane based paint, you can get away with not using a primer if you scuff the paint thats on there, the paint its self needs a tooth to bite into, paint bonds in two ways theres a chemical bond and a mechanical bond, if you scuff the paint(creating a mechanical bond), using something like a 3m grey scuff pads from any auto parts store you can apply color directly to that, after making sure its super clean tho, when you scuff it you need to essentially take the shine off of it it should look dull and flat when you're done.
the Italian red comes in numerous factory variance colors, the one they list for the 98 has a base coat and a mid coat, also know as a 3 stage color (base, mid , clear), you will need both of them to make a perfect match, if you want to save some money you can buy the Italian red for a 04 VFR it comes as just a base, just put down a couple coats of red and clear it, no need for the 2 different paints, the color of the VFR is slightly lighter but you would never notice with the belly pan being so far away, if you painted the side faring and attached it to the nose piece you would panel to panel like that you would see a difference
hopefully this helped a little

I was gonna do the Italian Red; but if I go for Color Rite, it would cost a fortune just for a little bit of paint. Instead, I am going to do it black, like my fender, and that I can pick up for cheaper. Then I am going to do 2 coats of clearcoat, and then wet sand it, and buff it out with 3M Perfect-it Rubbing
Compound.

Rattle can red
Painted mine the exclusive color of rattle can red by Krylon. Paint was purchased at equally exclusive paint store Walmart. All kidding aside occasionally touch it when changing oil. Looks good with red wings on tank, bike is black.

I did the cheap rattle can black too, came out about like cal2az pics show. Since that little spoiler is down low so it gets crap all over it anyway, I thought there was no point spending a lot of money on it. Looks fine 4 years on!
