RC51 fairings on Superhawk
#32
I've heard negative stuff about those already painted RC51 fairings on ebay. Plus, something to consider with those, is they are designed to fit the RC51, so they are pre-drilled for the RC51. So if you where going to use them, you would essentially need to make some custom brackets so that you can use the mounting points. Being that the paint job's on these are kinda shabby, re-drilling your own holes in other places is probably not the best idea, as your going to more than likely crack the paint, which will continue to get worse....
I ran into a guy on a CBR600 last week with a set of them on his, and they where cracked in several places...
The fairings I got are supposed to be knock offs of the Sharkskinz fairings. They are fiberglass, and when I first saw them, I was concerned with them being fairly thin, however once they where painted, they don not feel nearly as thin as they looked like they where unpainted. Its hard to compare quality of a factory plastic piece that is painted, or even my old Sharkskinz lower fairing that had been painted 3 times to a fresh brand new fiberglass set that has never seen primer or paint... Witha few coats of primer, paint, and clear, they seem very close to everything else.

here are a couple new pictures...
I replaced the original mesh stuff... Here are a couple pictures specifically of that...
up close with the camera, you can see whats behind it kinda, but standing a few feet away, you really can not see anything. Just white mesh

Nice work Josh. I especially like your use of white in the lower vents, screens and fasteners. Really gives depth and line to the fairing. Are they screws and washers (that appear to join the upper and lower fairings) that you painted white? Did you clear coat the whole job?

I have seen a few rc fairings on firestorms & they always look like they dont belong, but your work looks great, nice paint job too.the blue & white is really nice, well done.

joshua I think you have inspired a following! It looks good, and it certainly is different and probably will confuse a lot of people. I'm not so sure I like the idea of it though. I love the RC, Its just that the SH held the torch first for honda, then the RC came along and stole it all away! and now the SH is pretending to be the new cool guy on the block. Reminds me of Toy Story or something. Weird. Either way, it sounds like you effectively accomplished your goals so well done for that and enjoy!

Wow i haven't logged in here in a WHILE...
Just doing some web surfing decided to check in, so i guess ill answer some of the questions since my last post, even if they are months old lol...
Fairings... They are sharkskinz knock off's i got online. But after a year of riding on them, ton's of wheelies and 100+ mph rides, they are holding up just fine... The one and only thing I think really still needs done is adding a mounting point down low by the back on the right... that long piece moves in the wind which of course I don't notice, but I was told that from riding behind me its noticable... So i'll probably add a bracket similar to that of the sharkskinz lower fairing bracket to throw a bolt in there and keep it still...
Rad's... they are still in stock position, which is just below the vents on the RC fairings... However they get plenty of air from the inside, and I really haven't noticed any temp changes... These bikes have always run hotter than many others anyway, but no real change vs normal... I have added some watter wetter, but i think that was before the fairing swap anyway...
Overall I've been happy... and yes, its confused many people on what it is...
I did change the headlight this year, it now has a Ducati 999 low beam projector right dead center with a 85w bulb in it... Its a 9005 (or 6) bulb that is single beam... I have the hi beam fixture too, but being as I already painted, it didn't want to cut a hold for it, so that may come on the next go around...
on a side note... i have been considering moving one of the rad's to the front... Thats kinda why i got online here today to do some research on what people with fighters have done... Being as the rad's are mostly hidden now anyway, it won't look any different, but if I can move one up front and drop a few degree's in the process, i think it would be worth it to me...
As for why i went this route... It wasn't so much that I was chasing the RC51 look... More so because the day I bought this bike i said i wanted to add a lower fairing... but i was never happy with the lower fairing from sharkskinz... i mean great quality, just the front didn't follow a solid line down and just never did what i wanted it to do... I actually did consider fairings such as the Duc 999 or something too.. I can pretty much make anything work as long as the width is similar...
This set of fiberglass is probably gonna be for sale soon.... well... i guess it already is really... I have another paint scheme in mind and have a headlight design i really want to try out... but honestly, considering the work involved in prepping for a repaint, and redoing the headlight, i'm better off just selling this set and buying another set of fiberglass and starting from scratch... and for anyone who wants to do this, at this point its pretty much direct bolt on...

You say a "Sharkskin" Knockoff... so where was it purchased? I take it since it is not an original shark than it was purchased form somewhere else for less.

rc51 conversion? i got a couple questions ... came across this guy parting out a rc51, gave me some killa deals on prices on the parts ... will the stock rc51 fuel tank fit my super hawk? & what about a rc51 engine? will that bolt to the super hawk frame? i ask cause he offered me the complete rc51 plastic with tank & lights for $600. & rc51 engine for $400. i've been wanting to do the rc51 fairing swap since i got my vtr1000 & complete kit with matching tank just got me hook bad ... lol

^^ Tank wont fit, Engine wont fit.
if u have spare cash buy it from him and turn around and sell the tank and engine and make a few hundo's on it...If not just grab the fairings...
400 bucks for full fairings with a headlight is a steal.
