I love my FZ1 mirrors.
Just finished putting the FZ1 mirrors on.
I drilled the rivet out and put a bolt in there so I could really tighten them down, since yamaha's location is pivoted way too far inward. I did not dremel out the detents in the pivot. The arms now seem tight enough to not move from wind/bumps, but loose enough to adjust if needed or wack car mirrors with.
They are big, and buggy looking, but I can see everything. I'm going to get some blind spot mirrors also so I can see better when I'm humping the tank at high speeds. The mirrors won't look so tall and out of place when I put the taller windscreen on.

How did you angle them down? Tiltled up is how they fit when mounted flush against the fairing. I don't see any way to adjust the angle down without making some wedge shaped adapters or something.

HOw Do U Like These?
If you ignore the funky black tape I only recently took off, these are older R1 mirrors bolted to Don Herve's excellent extenders (rare as hen's teeth) and then to the OE VTR mounts & rubbers. The R1 mirrors are not as "high" as the FZ1's and in concert with the OE VTR mounts are closer to stock elevation wise. I also drilled out the R1 rivets but did not use its mounts & rubbers, and also used new button head cap screws to connect the OE VTR mounts to Don's extenders.

If your refering to my reply, i.e., about the tape, the second front on pic is without it and it is clean as it comes. What I see now is just the tips of my elbows and a great, wide view directly behind and to the sides.

If I remember correctly I took the bases from the superhawk mirrors and attached the fz1 mirrors to those using the factory bolts. I think I had to drill out the holes in the fz1 mirrors a little to get the bolts to go through.

Just going through the steps now
Bought the FZ1 mirrors (actually cheap fakeys off Ebay) and fitted them loose just to see what they'd be like. Can already tell visibility will be MUCH better, though I'm perplexed by the mounting issues. I don't want to drill out my bike's fairing and brackets to fit $20 mirrors, so I'm liking the idea about modding the FZ1 stalks with the OEM bases.

What is there to drill? The bolt spacing is exactly the same. What year mirrors did you get?
I should have posted the year, but I don't remember. I'd have to do a search again of what other user put them on, that I copied.
You will have to drill out the rivets on the hinge and either grind down the detents on the cast metal, or just put a bolt in there with some good locking star washers to hold it it in place at a different angle than the stock Yamaha angle.
If they're not tight enough, they'll fold back in at about 90mph with a little vibration.

Not totally swappable without help
[quote=CentralCoaster;180384]What is there to drill? The bolt spacing is exactly the same."
Yes, the bolt O.C. spacing is the same, but the bolts bear on the thickened stud shelf (is there another name for this- it'd be called "headspace" for a reloader) and the thickened portion is 0.35" dia. stock and 0.50" dia. on the FZ-1's. Thus the mirrors are not a direct swap.
