Fazer FZ1 Yamaha mirror upgrade
#5
This mod has been around for quite awhile on this forum (approx 3-4 years from the date of this post).
AFAIK, I came up with the FZ1 mirror mod after reading and trying the R1 mirror mod posted here on the site but I found it still too short for my tastes. I also didn't care for the angle of the R1 mirror stalk; kinda look like it's broken or bent. No, it needs modifying to work properly.
Here's a pic of them both:
R1 on left mount (as if riding), FZ1 on right

bolt spacing on FZ1 mirrors is the same so no mod to the bike needed. Threads have to be shortened to allow use of original enclosed Honda nuts (or you can leave tham as they are and use standards nuts if you are lazy bastard as me). pin holding the mirror arm to the mirror base has to be ground out and I used bolt and nylock nut instead of the pin to fix the mirror in correct angle. 1000% better view to the rear in fact I can almost see my back from behind :-)
i used cheap EMGO brand aftermarket mirrors so the mod costed me around 60$

Three birds:
1. I didn't grind the pin. I let it be a straight bolt-on operation. As such, the mirrors sit too far in from their standard position, but they are fairly stable when you lift them out and push them back into your preferred position. If I ride 10 miles home at 60 or 65 I usually don't have to adjust them. If I'm hitting speeds where I'm paranoid about cops, there's a decent chance I'll have to push one or both back into position. When you need to tuck them in, you can bring them all the way in to the windscreen.
2. The FZ-1 mirrors have a rubber boot that wraps underneath the perimeter of the mount where it touches the fairing. It makes the mirror prone to wobbling (obvious if you lug the motor too low, which no one here does because that's bad for the motor, of course. Of course.) I'd be curious to know if someone has remedied that condition, assuming they discovered the same issue. Thanks.
3. I'm not going to search, but I remember it being way easier to figure out what year FZ-1 mirror fit than the R1 or R6 mirrors. YMMV.
