Cut Down Yoshi's

Hotbrakes and I cut down my Yoshi RS-3 pipes by 5 inches and they turned out really well, not to mention the sound is a lot throatier.

Here are some pictures before and after:

Wow, that does look better. Personally I wouldn't have guess it would look that good. I'm going to cut down my Jardine's anytime soon though...

Well now that Reapers bike is louder than my chopped 2Bros, I'm gonna pull the packing out! Not really, but damn it sounds good.

If anyone has some pipes that are slightly damaged, I might be willing to buy them. I will probably be selling some carbon fiber Kerkers here shortly. They only have a thousand miles on them and are in pristine shape if anyone is interested. Not chopped lol.

Honestly I was expecting them to look "hack jobbed" when I read the thread title... but they do look pretty good... I think the key is you didn't go nuts and cut off 3/4's of the can... nice job.

VTR Steve:

The after picture is a 900RR rear and F3i front, both are 5 spoke.

lots of mods

In the second pic, i noticed the peg feelers are gone, the wheels are black (which I like) the red hugger looks nice and the polished frame looks good too so does the lower fairing. Almost a new bike! Good job.

Very interesting but with all the other mods you've done you are still running the OEM shock (no insult intended)? What have you done with your forks and brakes?

Sorry to hijack this thread but...

Where to you keep your steed and what do you do to secure it? I've read bike theft is very bad in merry old England. Also, how far do you have to ride to find nice roads around Manchester, how are the copers and are the gatzos as bad as they say? How much is insurance and tags in USD? I've also read its quite high? My dream is to bring my VTR and ride around England, then hit the IOM some day before they kill it or I die. My first bike was an old BSA 250.

Stone:

It took a couple of hours to complete the job and best to do it with a buddy. Whatever you do, make sure you measure twice and cut once.

We also used a chop-saw or mitre saw that was fitted with a diamond tipped circular blade to cut the aluminum. This ensured that the cuts would be uniform versus using a hand held saw/cutter.

Good luck.

I know I mentioned this before, but here's a link that breaks down the mod pretty well...

Ive been thinking of doing this with my Leos as I love the way they look, but want them a touch louder.

The main thing Im worried about though is the carbon fiber can appears to bulge a bit towards the ends. Wouldnt I need this bulge to put the caps back on?

Reaper, any chance you could help me out?

Carbon fiber is a whole different animal than metalics. I can be done but you risk significant interply delamination and will need to "pot" the cut end with a high-temp epoxy. A hydrojet cutting machine is the preferred method, as carbon is very abrasive and conventtional methods require special cutters. I cannot comment on the "bulged" end which presumably was formed as part of the layup process and would be difficult to duplicate.

Use masking tape to hold the fibers together while cutting. Skokievtr got a good point about the expoxy.

Measure the difference between the flair and outer canister to determine how much you would need to build-up the area where the end cap will sit. I believe Hotbrakes cut down his TB Carbon fiber pipes after a crash using the same method that I used to cut down my Yoshi's, but he did not have the issue of the flair to contend with.

Are you cutting one side or both side near the ends?

probably just near the end at the mid pipe. the leo logo is pretty close to the other end cap.

I cut my CF TBR's with no problem using masking tape as REAPER said. No fraying at all with a steel cutting composite blade on a miter saw.

If I could just figure out how to cut that big flat spot out with the rash on the mid pipe, I'd be happy. I gotta stop crashing. Correction-People need to stop crashing into me!

The cut down pipes look so much cleaner than the stock/aftermarket, pre-crash ones.

12 inch pipes are the cats meow in my opinion.

So if i were to cut mine down and take out the *stuffing* so to speak would i have any problems running my bike? ie tuning problems, loss of horsepower(anything noticable)? Right now i have d and ds which sound awesome, but, i would like to do something fun for once and chop my stocks down.

i just cut mine down another 2" last night, i'll post some pics after i'm done. stocker pipes will have to be rewelded as they are not riveted like aftermarket. very easy to do with aftermarket cans...i used a dremel with a cut off wheel no issues at all. mine should be in the ball park of 8 or so inches when done.
