New SH Owner from Denver Co

So always wanted a bike but always been a car person.
then decided to sell my rx7 and my friend said he'd give me his superhawk for it.
deal was done and now it sits in my backyard waiting for me.

never driven a motorcycle.
barely know anything about them.
So got to take a class and get my license, plus get comfortable with the bike before i really start riding it around.

anyways really excited to fulfill a dream.

and now questions, needs a rectifier where is reliable and relatively cheap to get one?
If anyone knows of a shop in Denver open after 6pm or on sundays where i can go try on and buy some gear would help a lot but i fear such a place may not exist.
And maintenance, i am a mechanic but know nothing about motorcycles so not sure what needs to be done and when.

pictures soon.

Performance Motorcycle on south broadway, just north of evans. they have a good selection, and a knowledgeable staff. also check out newenough.com and motorcyclesuperstore.com.....and of course, Craigslist!

Buy a service manual "Mr. Mechanic"...

welcome to the forum!

Be careful with the superhawk. it has far more power than is advisable for a new rider. Welcome to the forum.

Get a regulator/rectifier from an Yamaha R1. Do a search on this forum about what years work and how to install. The OEM Superhawk R/R overheats and fails regularly.

Welcome to the forum! Be careful. I recommend taking the beginner's MSF course.

Sweet ride! Dude that front tire looks shot replace it, wash outs aren't any fun. Be careful that's a lot of bike for a first. Take it easy for a few months short shift not saying lug it around thats hard on the drive line just easy. Welcome to the board.

AGREED

As tempting as it may be, really take it easy with it for a few months.
It has huge power for a new rider.
Learn to use the power (but half power is all you need to get a feel for it) and get used to it in all situations. Go on rides with other bikers who won't push you to ride fast. They will be the best to follow on the road.
And ask questions - none of them are dumb.

Welcome and good luck!

Welcome aboard, now duck!

What an age we live in. 1,000 cc torque monsters for first bikes. "It is better to ride a slow bike well than a fast bike poorly." Can't give attribution but it is very true. I'm going to hold my breath and wait, scary stuff there.

In a perfect world you would have a friend who would let you make all your newb mistakes on a beater 250 he didn't care about so that you would have muscle memory built in when the S'hawk puckers your rectum for you.

Keep us updated. The coming chapters of your tutorial would be entertaining for all of us who wish you well.

haha thanks for all the help and advice.
i am taking it very very slow.
and i will be signing up for a class as soon as i can.

i will replace the front tire when time permits.
luckily there is shop a block away from my work that seems to almost specialize in motorcycle wheels and tires.
just got to pull the wheel, somehow.

i did however ride it today.
quite fun, and quite scary.
physics are unlike anything i've experienced.
gonna take a while to get used to it.

rode it around the block once, neighborhood only.
realized you dont turn a motorcycle but lean with the hip.
took it slow and when i had a small straight hit in second at about 45% ? throttle.
pretty quick, glad i remembered where the brake was though haha.

in total stalled 4 times, 3 in the backyard trying to get to the front without going through the fence.
and once at the end of my street after which it didnt want to start anymore.
probably for the better it didnt though.

the main reason why i went for the 1000cc is that i am 6'5" and would like something big enough, granted i might have overdone it but thats what i was offered as a trade for my car.

im pretty sure i'll go down sometime but glad it wasnt today.
thats all for now i suppose.
i'll try again whenever i have time.

nuts and bolts are cheap and a good body guy can do wonders after you get used to riding.
