WARNING - old cam chain tensioners prone to fail
#31
Honda likely won't admit they changed the CCT, because that would mean the early ones were defective. $$$
So, does anyone know when Honda was supposed to have made the change?
I have a 2002. My 4 year extended warranty (purchased solely because I has heard about CCTs) will run out next year (bought previous years model new for cheap).

I got paranoid awhile back after reading all the posts on this forum and bought mine from Schnitz Racing. They had the best prices I found searching around, which, at the time, was $37.00 apiece. I just looked and they're selling the A.P.E. tensioners for $44.95 apiece, which I guess is still better than most places. I had a good experience with their service.

Replaced the CCTs on my 04 SH with manuals at 10k miles - had a pink dot on the rear CCT and the front had an orange dot, bought the bike with 600 miles on it so I believe them to be original.
The manuals came without directions and was told by A.P.E. to screw them in finger tight and back them out 1/4 turn and lock them. To allow for feel I backed them out 1/2 turn - started the bike and it took another 1/2 turn until I heard any noise, went in 1/4 turn and locked them ( 3/4 turn out from finger tight final setting )

Anyone else try replacing the CCT?
Has anyone else tried replacing the CCT with the updated Honda CCT? I was just quoted $350-$450 in labor and $69 for parts- is that in line with what others have paid?
There have been many cases where the spring breaks in the cam chain tensioners. Usually this takes place around 20 - 30k. Some people report that there is a noise that warns you of impending doom. Others say their engine just seized with no warning.
What happens is that the spring breaks then there is no tension on the cam chain and it jumps a tooth/teeth and you drop a valve.
I believe Honda has addressed the problem by updating the part and the new CCT's have a pink or orange painted dot on them (this needs to be verified though).
Another solution is getting a manual CCT from the aftermarket such as "APE".
In any case I strongly suggest you replace them if you have a bike in that milage range without the lastest iteration of CCT's from Honda.
This maybe the latest revision:
Part Number: 14520-MBB-013
Description: LIFTER, TENSIONER
Source: HONDA
Price: $53.57
