Can a MOD change the main title to read '98-'05 rather than '97-'05....?

Josh got his $25 discount and I have the satisfaction of saying that I was right. No changes whatsoever between 98, 99, 03, and whatever year the blue came out (04?), right down to the same shimstack. So, comedo, whatever forks you were working on were either modified or not from a VTR at all. See pics:

Any post 01 Yellow

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a Hawk and would like one in Yellow, but would also like an 01+ model. Did they come in yellow for the 01+ years? (Canada included?)

Cheers!!

Since I recently started making shift levers I've found that there are differences in the shift linkages after 98. I'm not sure when, exactly, but the 97/98's have an aluminum shift rod and the rod ends have male threaded ends. The fiche I looked at was a little unclear, but sometime after that Honda went to a small steel shaft (cheaper, not nearly as cool) which uses rod ends with female threads. If anyone has more details on that I would be really interested to hear it.

Jamie.. what we need is a good clear picture of both styles,, Then a thread started .. asking user to state which style they have, and what the date of manufacture is from the steering head tube VIN plate.

That way you get a known answer (right understanding of which type) and a standardized base line for the year group (no confusion purchase date, or Marketing sales date, vs date of manufacture....ie.. mine is titled as a 98, but date of manufacture was 2/97)

Im headed back in to work for a few hours,, But when I come home to install my new JD custom shift lever I can take a few pictures and start a thread. What I need is a good high, well light picture of the steel later model design shift rod. If someone has one and can send it to me... I'll put it up.

What about the carbs, I thought there were 4 different carbs VPT2A and VPT3B and their california variants then the EFI system on the 2003-5. I bought my SH from a guy who thought my '02 had EFI as well, I thought about explaining the difference but opted not to.

If there was an EFI varient, has anyone every back modifidied to carbs, or upgraded to EFI?

No VTR's had EFI. The carbs are also identical throughout the years.

A SuperHawk with fuel injection - I wish!!!

That's one of things Honda should have done in roughly 02-03. But alas, the big twin market was already falling on it's face by then.....

I just noticed this today as my buddy was doing a motor swap ('04 motor)on his '98 VTR. The 2004 has additional casting on the upper left of the pic. Both pics are from the intake side of the front cylinder head. I imagine it's for a sensor on the XL1000. Not sure which year they started doing this... anybody?

It's highly debated over the purpose of this casting. I'm surprised you haven't heard of it yet. It's believed to be either an additional piston bearing, a camshaft cooler, or a flux capacitor. The technology is "way out there" though and nobody is yet to figure this one out.

My guess from the location is a camshaft sensor, held in place by a small bolt (which would go where the small landing is at 1 o'clock). I looked and my '05 has the casting extension.

This could be a sign that Honda had considered EFI before production died. The Camshaft Position Sensor (CPS) on cars is used for timing Sequential Fuel Injection (SFI=injectors pulse in time with opening of intake valves). It's also used for spark timing.

Of course addition of a Flux Capacitor would have yielded much better performance.

I must of been out of the loop. It definitely looks like CPS provisions for the Varadero.

The Vara does have a CPS in that very spot... So I'm guessing it just a shared cast for the parts...

Too bad they didn't make the switch to EFI for the final 2 years. I would have paid a few hundred extra for it.

Every part from 98-00 will interchange. Most parts (~90%) from 98-05 will interchange... fairings included.
