Bafflectomy and backfireing??
Hello I'm new to the forum. I recently finished a bafflectomy on my 98 superhawk. I drilled one side with a hole saw back in 2004 and chickened out so I fixed it with a steel ring and some JB weld and rode the rest of that year with no troubles. Well in 05 my daughter was born and the bike got put away due to money issues. Well I decided that this year i am gonna ride. I got her running again clean carbs, new plugs, and new battery. Thing is the ring fell off the back of the exhaust so I went ahead and drilled the other side and pulled them out. It seems to run fine but, but it backfires some when running at a steady rpm, and backfires alot when decelerating. Anyway do I need to rejet, or is there a fix for it. Or should I just deal with it until I decide to buy new cans.

I just bought a '98 Hawk that has had a bafflectomy. I don't know to what extent the baffles were modified but the previous owner told me he had them gutted. The bike exhibits the same backfiring as described during decel. I plan to remove the PAIR, but is the backfiring (popping) during decel harmful or is it more of an annoyance? Or in other words, should I do disable the PAIR ASAP or at my leisure? THanks guys.

No rush, it's just noise. If the baffles are there, the unburned fuel still gets burned by the PAIR process you just don't hear it.

Huh? I was responding to the OP.
but in your case, decel popping = PAIR

Thanks guys, I spent most of the day chopping off the rear fender, cleaning crud and I took care of the pair system. It took care of almost all of the backfire. I think it backfires when I have the choke on still as I ride to work in the morning and it is kind of hard to get warmed up in the mornings. I took it out when I got done tonight and almost all the decel backfire is gone. But I must have bumped my light to hard as the low beam doesn't work now since I put the front end back together. Oh well I thanks again for the help.
