Winter projects 2014

Just wanted to start a thread to share our winter superhawk projects

Mine are:
Powdercoat frame black (and hopefully install frame bracing)
Install adjustable mixture screws
Install crf rear brake reservoir
Install zx10 regulator/rectifier
Fix my bouncing taillight
Maybe get new tires...

What is your vtr project??

Plans are complete teardown. I'm building new shelves in the basement to help keep everything organized.

-Weld CBR900RR brace to swingarm
-Powdercoat gloss black the frame, sub frame, swingarm, and RC Component wheels
-Install '07 CBR1000RR front end
-Install Ohlins rear shock

Should look and feel like a completely different bike by spring time

If I have enough time, build an aluminum fairing stay and sub frame, install JE 11.5:1 pistons and Webcams.

EDIT: Since I can MIG weld aluminum now, I might brace the frame like you James. Not sure yet.

I will be working at:

- stripping the set of carbs now sporting the Factory Pro HDJ needle jets and 1.7 jet kit; removing all unnecessary brackets, replacing all fasteners with Ti and ditching the stock steel side plates in favour of carbon units. Will also need to guesstimate a jetting starting point for the new set-up...

- fit Dymag (07+ CBR600RR) wheels (and CMC front rotors); front should be relatively straightforward (triples are also from a 07+ CBR600RR), though the rear will require some work (different axle size, who knows about spacers......). Will give the front caliper pistons a good cleaning too while I am in there to change the pads for the CMCs...

- fix taillight mount (yes, the f***in' plastic tabs in the rear cowl are busted again!!!!! junk!); I will look at mounting the taillight directly to the subframe (makes some aluminum brackets), it couldn't possibly be flimsier than the stock set-up......

- install LED voltage monitor in instrument cluster (give me a heads up next time something runs afoul)

- remove shock and have it rebuilt (will take advantage of shock removal to disassemble and regrease suspension linkage, as well as replace lone remaining steel linkage bolt with Ti)

Likely find a few other minor odds and ends but that should just about do it......

Winter projects 2014

Already started down this path a few months ago.

- Original forks were straightened
- Painted all fairings
- Added APE CCT's
- Cleaned and adjusted turn signal switch
- Filed sticking gas tank cap so easy to open
- Replaced front and rear tires with Conti's

Final step is to replace original exhaust. Rican219 beat me to the Jardine Rt1's, Captainchaos was selling. Lucky Dog! Will be adding Devil's or Jardine's.

Plan to ride all winter long since I am a Florida native. Minneapolis, and Illinois friends have already told me to go screw myself concerning this, as they warm up their sleds!

I feel like a complete slacker seeing those lists. My only plan for this off season is a custom rear brake line. After caliper relocation, the oem doesn't sit so well.
Other hobbies have taken the funds and time from my Hawk. The Jeep needed new exhaust and a few u-joints, sent my chainsaw piston and cylinder to a pro builder to have it altered , and my audio addiction has resurfaced. The vinyl bug has bit me hard!

I have currently in process:

CP pistons 98.5 mm bore, 11.2 compression to be made
Cams regrind close to Moriwaki stg1 specs
Head porting
New CNC machined lower triple for blade forks

After engine assembly and break in, Ignitech programmable CDI unit with some dyno tuning.

Ignitech is just tuning of ignition, comparable to FactoryPro 4deg advancer or HRC cdi unit. But this one allows full customization and some more features, like adjustment of power going to the coils (stick coils uses less power than original coils). Unit itself is relatively cheap, tough part is to find experinced tuner who can get some benefit from it.

If I have time and $ will yank both OEM Schrader valve stem caps and upgrade to sweet Pep Boy units. But I'm probably just dreaming big

What is the advantage of these stem caps other than the obvious bling factor? Do they offer less unspiring weight? Do they make the bike turn-in quicker?

I don't mean to be presumptuous, but I have to question your choice of the Pep Boys units. I don't think going aftermarket is the best idea. I'm almost positive there are Honda OEM caps from other models that are a direct, plug-and-play if you will, swap. I've searched, but I can't locate a valve cap swap guide sticky or even a compatibility list. I suspect there are even other OEMs that are direct swaps or that may require a minimum of machining to work.

I did find a best-bang-for-the-buck mod thread and, surprisingly, the valve cap mod didn't even place. All I can think is that most of us are thinking along the lines of going with pricy aftermarket units - like Pep Boys - rather than simply putting in the leg work to find OEM units that will work. Shame on us. Shame on you, Jerry.

any opinions?

Veypor?
Sigma?
KOSO?

Chinese knockoffs any good?

My friend had a vapor on his quad and i wasn't impressed. I prefer analog tach, digital speedo. I think koso has that.

If you are doing the valve stems, swap to some 90* angle ones. Makes it sooo easy to air up. Especially the front.

Jealous of most of your modding aspirations except that I will be riding mine which to me is like crack (sorry for distasteful comparison), more like air or water. Needed but good for you too.

I am putting the CBR600RR front end on if I can. I have it so may as well do it.

I hope to buy/swap/barter/con/beg to get a F.I.L. from one of the bestest members here!

I put in new pads, new RBF fluid & new Pirelli's before my last trackday for the year...now, its sleeping for the winter.

FYI, I cut the lid a couple days ago. Just going to be working on it here and there when I have time.

Winter? strange, strange, foreign countries...

Its summer here! Gorgeous, sunny days.
Anyhoo, here's what I'm doing:
Kawasaki ZX10r 04 05 forks and calipers, gsxr1000 08 09 mastercylinder. Will have CBR600rr lower triple and a billet upper one drilled for a superbike bar. Have to sell my OEM front end to get the triples...

And it will work with my OEM wheel and disks. (axle same diameter, zx10r disks 300mm, VTR 298mm. I'm sure I can lose 1mm somewhere- will need 1mm packers under the disks to centre them up under the calipers properly, according to my measurements.)

Also working on a set of exhaust cans, made out of deco stainless with a square checkered finish. Going for a bit of a better job than my current set... I've had my trade cert for a few years now, no excuse for daggy cans like that...

Kieran that would be interesting to see both your franken front end and your exhausts, remember.... lots of vibration i know whe dont feel it anymore but you know when a I4 guy rides your bike... their like it vibrates so much etc...

my plans for the hawk are not that big
still havent done my Coil on Cap mod... even though ive got some cbr coils
was gonna do a valve adjustment but the !@#$% timing nut cover is fucked up,
then i was like hey lets adjust the carb needles which where set to high
but the f*ing PO super glued the seal on the rubber inflatable skirt thing, but with the carbs in place it needed to come off for the shims and it ripped for !@#$% sake
so 60 euros for a spare set of carbs and i am running again but to quote limp bizkit : one of those days !!!!!!

most of my time is spend on my GSXR
starting with undercutting the transmission, and putting new crank and conrod bearings in along with custom pistons and crower titanium rods etc etc

Here's what I intend to do:
Refresh front forks oil, seals etc and revalve.
Document electrical system performance then clean, re-hab & grease all connectors & then re-measure.
Convert all lamps to LEDs
Install coil on plug mod

We'll see how much gets done.

I'm pretty sure that's illegal in Illinois - if you care.

More importantly, I had mine wired that way on another bike once until my riding buddy told me it made it more difficult to notice when my turn signal was flashing.

That is a good second point you made. A friend has been running this way for years without a problem. He is more noticeable but I don't see his turn signaling so well.

Even if illegal, I don't know that a cop would ever give you trouble for it.

I thought it was more important that my buddy knew what I was doing when following me, so I dropped the rear running lights. I really think a brighter tail light would go further than rear running lights in making you conspicuous.

Looking just now, I can't find where rear amber running lights are illegal, so the law has changed or I'm just wrong. Again, even if illegal, I can't fathom getting busted on it. I see so many things regarding vehicle lighting that are illegal and no one ever gets busted on it. I guess unless you **** off a cop and they're looking for something.

Amber running lights are illegal for the reason that amber is designated for turn signals.
I agree that a bigger light profile makes for way more safety.

I noticed some bigger scooters have huge led running lights as wide as the turn sigs. Really caught my eye so I drilled a few holes in the turn sig lens and installed very bright red leds.

This gives the proper red lighting but makes it bigger. Cars wont know what to think if they see amber always on. (whens the last time you saw that?)
