Re: vfr swing arm wheel

I would look for a vfr rim on e-bay or at bike salvage yards any thing else is going to effect the ride and handeling of the motorcycle

Well, offset would matter..... alot!

Even VFR wheels from generation to generation can be off and need to be machined to fit correctly (some models only). Anyway, if your wheels aren't on the same track, yeah, you're going to have some serious handling issues.

Aftermarket makes some 6inch wide rims if you want to go big but are quite costly tho'.

Re: vfr swing arm wheel...my 2 cents!

Hi there...I've done the VFR SSS swap on my SuperHawk, and I recommend going with the stock wheel...why can't you go wider? It's simple really, the (rider's) left side of the arm curves around the wheel/tire and only clears it by a fraction of an inch. This not only limits your tire choice (a 190 tire will likely rub the arm) but consequently the wheel width. Hey, most of the VFR wheels are 5.5" wide...just not sure which years. Go to the VFR list (vfr@wisc.edu) to ask which years it was 5.5". My wheel is 5.5, but I'm not sure of the year since I got it on ebay. I think it's a 2001? The width & offset has to stay "stock" or your bike will pull severely to the left by offsetting to the right (that's the only way to get more width without hitting the arm!)
Cheers!

Re: vfr swing arm wheel

Any VFR wheel from 1990 to the present should work (have seen the mod using a '90-'93 wheel).

Re: vfr swing arm wheel

There are differences. Here's how they break down:

90-93 5.5 inch 8 spoke (highly sought after for looks, also heaviest)
94-97 5.0 inch 5 spoke (170 stock tire that speeded up handling)
98-06 5.5 inch 5 spoke (more angular looking spokes than 94-97)

THere are differences to the mounting faces and need machining for proper offset in some but not all cases when you mix/match.

Re: vfr swing arm wheel

I stand corrected, SuperB. The 90-93 also runs a stock 170 size, but I went to the 180 when it was time for some new tires.
